Astrogrid Workshop – Group C (solar) Anne-Marie Broomhall, Bill Chaplin, Yvonne Elsworth, Steve Hale, Andrew Inglis, Brek Miller, David Pascoe, Graham Verner With the able assistance of Astrogrid gurus Elizabeth Auden and Silvia Dalla

Workshop problems: Serving up the BiSON data on Astrogrid Comparison of BiSON p-mode excitation events with GOES flares and SOHO LASCO CME data Comparison of SOHO MDI and EIT images Making an IDL wrapped method to generate BiSON power spectra on Astrogrid

Serving up BiSON time series data Brek, Steve and Elizabeth have been configuring a database server to add a BiSON time series to Astrogrid (Java+Tomcat+DSA) Problems were encountered when running DSA 3.02 with Java 1.5. Kona Andrews resolved this by adding a javax.xmltransform.TransformerFactory property in the JAVA_OPTS env variable There seem to be problems with Fedora Core rpm installed packages that are not present with the Sun Java SDK package or Apache Tomcat

Excitation comparison Investigate any possible correlation between helioseismology data from BiSON and large solar events Histogram of BiSON data from high amplitude events was compared with data obtained from Astrogrid for flares (magnitude > M5) and CME events (linear speed > 1Mm/s) Searching the appropriate catalogue was easy, although time data in VOT files had an undefined UCD type that had to be set manually

Results No correlation was found between high amplitude BiSON events and high solar activity, indicating that the global modes of oscillation are insensitive to local features

Results We then looked for cross-matched events between BiSON excitations and strong magnitude GOES flares. Cross-matches indicate events that are common in time to within +/- 0.5 days, indicated in red, complimentary non- matched values are shown in blue.

Comparison of SOHO MDI and EIT images SOHO MDI dataset was used to produce a contour map with Aladin These were overlayed on a coincidental EIT image TRACE images were tried but the datacube format was not recognised by Aladin

IDL method for BiSON data Once BiSON time series data are available on the Astrogrid, it would be useful to return a power spectra for any given selected epoch A function to Fourier transform a given time series into frequency space was prepared in IDL by Bill and a shell script linking it to the Astrogrid software was created with the help of Silvia Users should be able to select a time frame for BiSON observations and through the workflow receive time series and frequency power data, along with a power spectrum image
