QXF Cable Status D.R. Dietderich Conductor Working Group Video Meeting, Sept. 17, 2014

Sept. 17, 2014QXF Cable Plans - D.R. Dietderich QXF Cable Parameters Mid-thickness = mm +/ mm Width = mm +/ mm K.S. angle = 0.55 deg. +/ deg. Pitch Length= 109 mm +/- 3 mm S.S. core= 11.9 mm wide, towards thick edge To be determined – Annealed or un-annealed wire – Preliminary RRR measurements at the edges of strands extracted from cables suggest that annealed wire may not improvement in RRR significantly. Fabricated cables 1055Z (1 UL) and 1057Z (2 UL) LARP plans to manage the cable during coil winding – By using the winding block and CTD binding agent

Sept. 17, 2014QXF Cable Plans - D.R. Dietderich Highest Score in Strand This may be the best method if one assumes that the RRR at the edge of a cable is determined by the wire with the highest number of sheared sub- elements Have new polishing unit to improve and speed-up metallographic sample preparation 1042Z-12 Thin Edge

Sept. 17, 2014QXF Cable Plans - D.R. Dietderich Core Width and Location R&D Working with OSU on a plan for cables with different stainless steel core widths and locations inside the cables. – Focusing on the range of 70% to 95 % coverage and different locations – Fabricated 8 samples – Plan to HT in Oct and test early next year R c and R a studies Calorimetric AC loss measurements

Sept. 17, 2014QXF Cable Plans - D.R. Dietderich Cable Measurements Hard drive on old CME system has been replace and software being installed – Cable fabrication on hold until system is running New CME system is being commissioned – Updated hardware and software Designing reference block for QXF – CERN and LARP should agree on parameters of gauge block.

Sept. 17, 2014QXF Cable Plans - D.R. Dietderich Issue with Buckling of Core in Cables FNAL has observed thickness increases of ~0.2 mm in a 1 m section of QXF cable 1050Z (P23OL1050). – See presentation by Steve Krave Coil WG meeting June 12, 2014

Sept. 17, 2014QXF Cable Plans - D.R. Dietderich Plans and Concerns LBNL is inspecting longer sections of QXF cables for thickness variations. – It is thought that the core buckling is due to relaxation of the wires in the cable. At this time no changes in cabling process. Should LARP implement changes to post cabling handling? – LARP is examining post cabling handling Do cables made at CERN for the 11T or QXF programs show bumps in the cables after being insulated? Are these bumps an issue for coil fabrication and magnet performance? – It was observed that when more pressure was applied to the cable the bumps could be removed. Coil cross sections need to be evaluated after the first QXF coil is sectioned.
