Overview FY2009 Activities –Test and Apply algorithms –AWIPS Weather Event Simulations (WES) –NWP Images FY2010-FY2011 Activities
FY09 (CIMSS) Test and Apply algorithms for new satellite data imagery/products in support of Storm Prediction Center (SPC) Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) and Local NWS offices. –Provide access via AWIPS and N-AWIPS to a Convective Initiation (UWCI) decision support product based on GOES infrared radiances. –CIMSS will use high-spectral resolution AIRS data to simulate the ABI spectral bands. –The number of MODIS products, which would also be derived with future ABI bands, available through AWIPS will be extended. –CIMSS scientists will expand interaction with and seek feedback from the NWS, including the addition of more participating offices, more forecaster product utility surveys and additional NWS office site visits. –CIMSS continues to build a strong relationship with the forecasters at the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sullivan, Green Bay, La Crosse, Wisconsin and Marquette, Michigan. –To cover a broader base of forecasters, multi-year visits between CIMSS and local/regional NWS offices have been planned.

Possible UWCI Algorithm Enhancements Improve diagnosis of small cumulus, this can be improved via UWCI algorithm methodology Some of the UWCI thin cirrus detection can possibly be improved but new spectral information needed for accurate cirrus detection Rapid anvil expansion FAR can be mitigated

FY09 (CIMSS) AWIPS Weather Event Simulations (WES). –We will explore the development of an environmental event simulator for user education. This would use historical simulated ABI synthetic data sets to build case studies demonstrating the utility of the ABI data. This activity would leverage the WES (Weather Event Simulators) and GOES-R AWG proxy efforts. Currently two separate efforts are underway: CIMSS will continue development of 4-5 June 2005 convective WES case study (as shown above in FY2008 accomplishments) beginning work on including level 2 products (cloud properties, TPW, and LI). b) CIMSS will begin coordination and development of WRF-ARW Hurricane Katrina AWIPS WES event. NWS Miami has requested an ABI hurricane simulation data within AWIPS for training and preparing forecasters for future ABI hurricane decision support capabilities. –CIMSS will use proxy WRF-ARW profile and satellite radiance cases to simulate top of atmosphere radar (satellite perspective) and display within AWIPS to provide comprehensive forecaster interpretation. –The CIMSS team will begin investigation of the AWIPS-II early access and product demonstration.

FY09 (CIMSS) NWP Images. –CIMSS researchers and scientists will explore the creation of simulated (synthetic) GOES-R datasets, including forecast images of ABI bands using a regional model, such as WRF. This will build upon the forecast image capability already demonstrated with the CIMSS Regional Assimilation System (CRAS). CIMSS proposes to begin coordinating access to simulated ABI channel infrared radiances from WRF NWP output (either locally or from local NWS office) using AWIPS system.

FY10/11 Continue needed tasks from FY09 –WES Case refinements Continue participation in follow-on SPC spring hazardous testbed experiments (and/or other candidate experiments in development). –UWCI refinements, AIRS, etc. Future years could also include applications of data from the next generation polar system (NPP/NPOESS) and more GOES-R like datasets. Also, we would explore the development of an automated procedure and web page that would routinely accumulate data from satellite and ground-sites so that products such as moisture or atmospheric stability generated by GOES-R like capabilities can be validated, or proved.
