Vietnam Survival Challenge By Lydia, Kelly, Phil, Andres and Mike

 American helicopter  Used as a medevac, escort, and troop carrier helicopter  First arrived in Vietnam in April, 1962  First armed Huey’s in October, 1962 – equipped with 2.75 inch rockets and.30 caliber machine guns  At the peak of the war, US had 3,900 helicopters in Vietnam – 2/3 were Huey’s  American Helicopter  Nickname: Slicks MO

 Transports all types of cargo  Has the capacity to hold up to 44 fully equipped soldiers – can be increased to 55 in times of emergency  Three cargo hooks on the bottom of the helicopter – one holds up to 11,793 kg and the other two hold up to 7,711 kg  Has radar emission detector, interference flare launchers, and if needed two 12.7mm Browning M- 2HB machine guns for protection  American Helicopter MO

 The UH-1 Iroquois was used as a gunship, providing air support for troops in the ground below, but could also transport troops when needed  American Army used this helicopter  For American Troops the Iroquois can boost morale. For the VC it was only a bad sight  The VC could defend itself against the Iroquois by hiding in the terrain or by trying to shoot it down with an RPG  Rocket carrying Iroquois were called “Frogs”  “Guns” if the Iroquois had only guns PM

 The role of the F-4 was ground support and air superiority  The F-4 Phantom II was used by the Americans being used by the USAF and the USMC  They often boosted morale of the American troops as they helped ease the attack on the ground  The VC would try to shoot them down by using Surface to Air Missiles or have the NVA MiG fighter planes shoot them down  No real slang terms used, just called “Phantom” PM

 American Heavy Bomber  United States Air Force’s strategic nuclear and conventional weapons platform  Nickname: BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fuck or Big Ugly Flying Fucker)  Range: (unrefueled) 8,800 miles  Length: 159 feet  Wingspan: 185 feet ACR

 US Military used Napal-B in Vietnam  Causes 3 rd degree burns  Made of powdered aluminum soap and gasoline  Developed by US chemists at Harvard during WWII  Dropped by planes  Vietnamese went underground to avoid it  Improved US morale KZ

 Originated as an herbicide  Tested primarily in the 1960’s  Purpose of weapon was to give deny enemy concealment in dense terrain  Dropped/sprayed by airplanes  Used by US  Vietnamese would take cover or run away in order to avoid it  Named by the color of the barrel that held the chemical  There was also Agents blue, white, purple, green and orange II KZ

 A mixture of explosives, napalm, gasoline, str7yne and motor oil  Usually in 50 gallon drums  Causes upward fire similar to that of a flame thrower LR

 Strategic bombing campaign  US air force bombed North Vietnam  First sustained American assault on North Vietnamese territory  Expanded US involvement in Vietnam  Demonstrated US air supremacy  Total of 643,000o tons of bombs dropped  Ended with President Johnson who terminated the operation to begin negotiations with North Vietnam LR
