Chemistry: Elements Chapter 5

Elements Elements- Substances that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance. Remember that elements are only made of atoms of that element! (The element iron is made of only iron atoms) Elements are the building blocks of all other substances.

Elements and states of matter Elements can be solids, liquids, or gases Examples Solids Elements Liquid Elements Gas Elements Hydrogen Oxygen Nitrogen Helium Gold Carbon Iron Sulfur Copper Magnesium Mercury Bromine

Elements and states of matter Most elements are solids at ordinary temperatures. Some elements are gases. Only two elements are liquids at room temperature. Each element has its own special properties that help identify it

Elements and substances Some substances are composed of only one element Iron Nails Aluminum Foil Copper Wire Tin Can Some substances contain more than one element Water Salt Sugar Steel Brass

Metals Metals have these properties Examples of Metals Have a bright and shiny luster Are malleable Most are silver-gray in color Most are solids (Except mercury) Are good conductors of electricity Are good conductors of heat Examples of Metals Aluminum, Tin, Lead, Iron, Gold, Copper, Nickel, Mercury

Non-Metals Non-Metals have these properties Examples of Non-Metals Solids, Liquids, or gases Dull Luster Different Colors Poor conductors of electricity Poor conductors of heat Examples of Non-Metals Hydrogen, Oxygen, Sulfur, Bromine, Krypton, Carbon

Metalloid Metalloids share some properties with metals and some with non-metals Examples of Metalloids Boron, Silicon, Arsenic, Antimony
