WHAT ARE WAVES? Wave is a disturbance that transfers energy. Medium(plural media) is a substance through which a wave can travel. The particles of a medium.
Waves O 1.1 Waves. Waves  Waves – disturbances that carry energy through matter or space but don’t carry matter.  Mechanical waves – waves that require.
Waves and Wave Properties. A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from place to place. A wave does NOT carry matter with it! It just moves the matter.
What is sound?* Sound begins with a vibration. Sounds travel in waves through a medium.
Waves What are waves?????.
Waves. Definitions Wave: a disturbance that transfers energy through a medium. The matter does not experience net movement, but vibrates about some rest.
Waves What does energy have to do with waves?. What does energy have to do with the wave? All forms of energy travel from one point to another point in.

Schindewolf Intermediate School 8 th grade Answers to Computer Lab Activity

Question #1 Waves in water are called “transverse” waves! Waves in water are called “transverse” waves!

Question #2  The lowest point on a wave is called a “trough”.  Yes- Like a pig trough- only NOT!

Question #3  A compression wave is the type of wave a slinky will generate. This is also known as a “longitudinal” wave.  Notice the difference between a transverse and a longitudinal wave in the picture….

Question #4  In a longitudinal wave, the particles can be smushed together- only that’s not very Scientific so we call it a “compression”. Look at the picture-You WILL have to know this for your test!

Question #5  The opposite of smushed together (compression) is spread apart. We call spread apart a “rarefaction”. Look at the picture again-  I promise this is on the test!! Trust me- I’ve seen the test! AND it was on TAKS last year!

Question #6  Light travels in a “transverse wave” NOT a compression waves.

Question #7  Earthquake waves are called “Seismic” waves.

Question #10  Sound waves are “longitudinal” waves. This is important!! You must know…

Question #8  Electromagnetic waves CAN travel through the vacuum of space. They do NOT need a medium. This is awesome for us-Otherwise you couldn’t text and we wouldn’t get sunshine!!

Question #9 The high point on a wave is called the “crest” The high point on a wave is called the “crest”

Question #11  Sounds above 20,000 Hz are called “ultrasonic”.  REMEMBER SOUND WAVES ARE…Longitudinal  P.S. Did you know waves are considered part of Physics?

Question #12  The distance from the middle of a wave (resting point) to the trough OR the crest is the amplitude.  Increasing the amplitude increases the POWER of a wave- Like a guitar!

Question #13  The intensity of sound is measured in “decibels”  Check out this chart showing sound decibels. Some occupations are considered High Risk for hearing loss because of sound decibels. The higher the decibel-the louder the noise!

Question #14  There are 3 bones in your ear!! The are the “hammer, stirrup and anvil”. Circle all 3  There is a lot of research to suggest that YOUR GENERATION may end up deaf in your 30’s and 40’s as a result of constant headphone usage!

Question #15  All waves transfer “energy.” Here are some examples of how waves affect you every day!!

Definitions- Pick 4 for your footnotes!  Wave- Transfer of energy  Amplitude- Distance from the resting line to the highest OR lowest point on a wave  Crest- The highest point on a wave  Trough- The lowest point on a wave  Compression Wave- A longitudinal wave like sound with side to side motion.  Transverse Wave- A wave with up/down motion like water and light.  Rarefaction- A point on a longitudinal wave where particles are spread apart.  Compression- A point on a longitudinal wave where particles are close together
