Carl D. Anderson By: Christian Witt

Born in New York City on September 3 rd, Graduated from California Institute of Technology in B.Sc. degree in Physics and Engineering. His early researches were dealing with x-rays.

Studied: Space distribution of photoelectrons ejected from various gases. Cosmic-ray Energy distribution of cosmic-ray particles and the energy loss. High speed electrons in traversing matter.

1993: First direct proof that gamma rays from the generate positrons in their passage through material substances. Continued his work on radiation and fundamental particles.

Scientific honors given to him: Nobel Prize Gold Medal of the American Institute of City of New York. Sc.D. of Colgate University. Elliott Cresson Medal of the Franklin Institute.

Scientific honors given to him: Presidential Certificate of Merit. LL.D. Temple University. John Ericsson Medal of the American Society of Swedish Engineers.

Only child of Swedish parents, Carl and Emma Anderson. Wanted a career in athletics, as a high jumper. Attended Los Angeles Polytechnic High School and became interested in science.

1924 he entered the California Institute of Technology. He would remain associated throughout his life. In 1927 Anderson received his bachelor's degree.

Continued his education in graduate school on a research grant. Centering his graduate work on physics and mathematics. Obtained a doctorate degree with honors in 1930.

Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923 for his work in physics. Promoted to assistant professor in Worked his way to chairman of the Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy in 1962.
