Kohlberg and Piaget By: Emily Umbel & Doreen Azat

Kohlberg Bibliography Born in Bronx, New York Went to a private High School. Attended College after High School but not right away enrolled at the University of Chicago. At first he worked in Psychology, he became interested in Piaget and began interviewing children and adolescents on moral issues. Soon after he made his first rendition of his new stage theory.

Kohlberg’s Six stages Level 1: -stage 1. obedience and punishment orientation -stage 2. individualism and exchange Level 2: -stage 3. Good interpersonal relationships -stage 4. Maintaining the Social order Level 3: -stage 5. Social Contract and individual rights -stage 6. Universal Principals

Piaget Bibliography Born in Switzerland on August 9 th 1896 In high school he wrote a short paper that started his career He has written over 60 books and 700 articles

Piaget’s Four Stages 1.Sensorimotor stage (birth to 2 years old) The infant builds an understanding of him or herself and reality through interactions with the environment. 2. Preoperational stage ( 2 to 4 years old) Objects are clarified in simple ways, especially by important features. 3. Concrete operations ( 7 to 11 years old) The child begins to think abstractly and conceptualize, creating logical structures that explain his or her physical experiences. 4. Formal Operations ( 11 to 15 years old) He or she is capable of deductive and hypothetical reasoning. His or her ability of abstract thinking is similar to an adult.

Comparing both Similarities There main interest remains in the description of the characteristics of the stages of individual moral reasoning and valuing of norms and community, and not the study of the process of acceleration towards the independent moral phase. All developed a theory on the development of people. and they all developed a variety of concepts in the psychoanalytic point of view of psychology. Differences Kohlberg’s theory is known to be a more developed version of Piaget. Piaget explains the formation of independent moral function. Piaget’s test is most influenced by the personal relationship to other people. Kohlberg's test seems to a larger extent to measure the subjects' norms and emotional reactions connected to inter- nalization of norms.
