 Joint effort of KDE and the Department of Workforce Development in collaboration with education partners  MISSION: Focus attention on the importance of planning for college and/or career by engaging students, parents, schools and communities in the process of effective advising 8

Trained volunteer community advisors:  meet one-on-one with every 8 th - and 10 th -grade student  use student’s Individual Learning Plan (ILP), EXPLORE/PLAN results to discuss: career aspirations and required education/training whether the student is on target to meet their goals whether student is taking the courses recommended to prepare them for a successful future  Also program will: provide information to student’s parent on how they can engage in their student’s college/career readiness 9

Designed to:  support schools in the advising process  help students see the connection between education and financial security in adulthood  help students maximize academic preparation and stay on track for success  deliver the message about the importance of school and college/career readiness by an independent source  engage students, parents, the community in college-/ career-readiness agenda  help districts increase college-/career-readiness of their students 10

Training for volunteer advisors:  Online – produced by KET  About 30 minutes  Covers ILP, EXPLORE/PLAN, developmental characteristics of 8 th- and 10 th -grade students, advising strategies  Includes video of advising sessions as examples  Certificate of completion  Volunteer advisors will need to sign a nondisclosure agreement are will be expected to follow district policies 11

QUESTIONS? What about FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)?  Prior consent to disclose student information is not required as long as the volunteer: performs a service for which the institution would otherwise use employees is under direct control of the institution in the use and maintenance of records agrees not to disclose personally identifiable information from student records --34 CFR §

QUESTIONS? Are criminal background checks required? KDE recommends districts review their board policies under KRS regarding criminal background checks for volunteers and review the requirements of KRS to determine whether criminal background checks are required or desired for these volunteers under Kentucky law and their policies. 13

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:  Community partner (business, chamber, P-16 council, local college or university, community service organization such as Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions Club; PTA, local Workforce Investment Career Centers; faith-based organizations…)  Volunteer Community Advisor (community members concerned about Kentucky’s and our children’s future : local business people, elected officials, college/university students and employees, government employees, retirees, parents…)  Parent  Teacher 14

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:  Mark your calendar for March  Contact your local middle or high school or your school district office to let them know you’d like to participate in Operation Preparation  If you are an employer, encourage employee participation  Online training available  Consider advising more than one child (sessions are only scheduled to run 20 minutes) 15
