Presentation transcript:

At this station you will: Learn the 2 main functions of the respiratory system. Learn the main parts of the respiratory system. Learn about the function of the diaphragm in breathing.

Use your textbook (Chapter 4, pgs ) or the websites below to learn about the Respiratory System. Record the answers to the following questions on your data sheet: What is the function of the Respiratory System? (pgs ) What are the main parts or organs of the Respiratory System (pgs )?

What are the parts of the respiratory system? Common names? Pharynx Larynx Trachea

Trace the path of air as it travels from the outside environment through the human body. Name the structures in order through which the air travels as it enters the body.

This muscle plays and important role in breathing. Brainstorm with your team about what the major responsibility of the diaphragm muscle is. Record your results.

The rib bones play an important role in breathing. Brainstorm with your team about what the major responsibility of the ribs is. Record your results.

At your station is a model of a lung (pg. 121) that will demonstrate what happens during inhalation and exhalation. Draw a diagram of the model (pg. 121) on your data sheet. Add labels to show which parts of the model represent the chest cavity, diaphragm, lungs, and trachea. Make the model “breathe”: Use one hand to hold the bottle firmly. With the knuckles of your other hand, push upward on the large balloon at the bottom of the bottle, causing it to form a dome. Remove your knuckles from the balloon, letting the balloon flatten. Repeat this procedure a few times. Observe what happens to the small balloon. Record your observations.

Respiration could not take place without the digestive and circulatory systems (Textbook pg. 114). Describe how the digestive and circulatory systems work with the respiratory system. Breathing could not take place without the diaphragm and the ribs (Textbook pgs ). Describe how the diaphragm and ribs make breathing possible. Are there other body systems required for respiration to take place?

Reset the station’s supplies. Go back to the first slide so the next group can begin.
