Why do we need air? We need air to breathe. The air we breathe has oxygen. We cannot survive without oxygen. To help us achieve this, we have RESPIRATORY.

Animals including Humans Year 6 Lesson 3 LI: To describe the functions of the lungs.

Input What is the role of the lungs? Why do we need lungs? Where are the lungs found?

The lungs Place your hands on your lower rib cage and feel what happens when you take a deep breath of air.

Why we breath? Breathing is automatic and never stops until death. Breathing only starts once the baby is born. The oxygen we breathe in is needed within our body to keep our muscles and tissue healthy. Without oxygen, the body calls would die in a few minutes. The carbon dioxide we breathe out is toxic to a mammal’s body so it needs to be expelled from the body.

The lungs

Structure of the lungs Air enters the lungs through the wind pipe (trachea). The trachea divides into two bronchi- one bronchus leads to each lung. The bronchus the divides into smaller bronchioles. At the end of each bronchiole is a small air sack called the alveoli.

Activity Label the diagram with the following: 1.Trachea 2.Bronchus 3.Bronchioles 4.Alveoli 5.Diaphragm 6.Ribs 7.Intercostal muscles

Activity Measure your lung capacity. Do not stretch the balloon otherwise everyone will. Take a deep breath Blow up your balloon with your single breath. Tie the balloon trying not to let any air escape! Measure the diameter of the balloon.

Plenary What can go wrong with the lungs? Insert a picture of a smoker’s lung.
