Machines Machines make work easier. Machines allow you to use less force to do work. work and energy video 13:00 min

Levers A lever is a long bar with a support. The fulcrum supports the weight of the bar and what the bar carries. The object you want to move is called the load. The effort is a push or pull that moves the load in some way.

Welcome to Discovery Education Player (3:23 minutes)

Wheel and Axle A special kind of lever that moves or turns objects

wheel and axle video 1:36min

Pulley A pulley is a wheel and axle with a a rope, wire or chain around it. A pulley changes the direction of force—you pull down on the rope to make the load go up

pulley video 2:53min

Inclined Plane An inclined plane is the same as a ramp. Objects can be slid up or down an inclined plane to make the job easier.

inclined plane video 1:28 min

Wedge A special kind of Inclined Plane Wedges are used to split things apart They can also be used to hold things together.

Wedge Video 1:43 min

Screw A screw is also an inclined plane. If you could unwrap a screw’s threads you could see the inclined place. Screws fasten things together.

screw video 1:44 min

Complex Machines Complex Machines are Simple Machines working together.

The handles are levers The sharp edge is a wedge Winding the handle is turning a wheel and axle inside
