History Ways and Means is the oldest committee Was first established as a select committee on July 24, 1789 (was discharged 3 months later) New committee was reappointed from the 1 st session of the 4 th congress in 1795; formally listed as a standing committee in that house rules on January 7 th, 1892

What does this committee do? “chief tax-writing committee of the United States House of Representatives”

Specialties Social Security Unemployment benefits Medicare Enforcement of child support laws Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, a federal welfare program Foster care and adoption programs
