> February 2010 Kick-Off meeting - Lilongwe Work Package Obectives 1. Creation of framework for Interregional and international cooperation –Regional (Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Botswana and Namibia (southern African countries heavily affected by HIV and AIDS). In all these countries national adult HIV prevalence exceeds 15%. In 2007, Southern Africa as a region accounted for 32% of all new HIV infection and AIDS related deaths globally –International (EU). Existing partnerships investigating State and other organisations’interventions in fighting HIV and AIDS. Sharing experiences and best practice in raising funds and project management 2. Strengthening integration of the involved African countries into the European Science and Technology (S&T) framework –Each Southern African country has different experiences and approaches but the various challenges and experiences need to be collated and the researchers integrated into the EU S&T framework

> February 2010 Kick-Off meeting - Lilongwe Tasks and Actions Inter-regional meetings of stakeholder fora –Overseeing two meetings where focus group activities are reported (what is the WP leader’s role? Are we to collate FGD data or will this be done at the meetings?) –Promote the involvement of researchers in the defining of the model for community based health care system for each specific target area (is the model specific to a country, group of countries, for southern Africa or for an area in a country? –Openning and publicizing the meetings to other relevant actors (we need to agree who should be brought in, or this be left to the national leading institutions to decide? Is this limited to the host country or can participating countries choose to bring in actors from their countries? Should an agreement be reached on who the relevant actors are before the meeting?) Knowledge exchange via website –Sourcing and ensuring scientific and other relevant reports from participanting countries are available on the CoBaSys website –Policy briefs and latest relevant research developments on each country made available for the Discussion Forum

Training Sessions on (Skills, Expertise) and Fundraising –Facilitate the exchange visits i.e. by the EATG to eastern and southern African countries (is there a scope for regional exchange visits for sharing experiences and best practices?) –Increasing regional research skills and expertise training (assuming most training sessions will be in Brussels, is there room for specific training to held locally? Is the participation limited to people in the consortuim or can training be opened up to other researchers in the university, government, civil society?) –Research and Skills Needs Assessment of (among eastern and southern African) Consortiuim members Fund raising Scientific publishing (what journal editors are looking for) Project/program proposal writing
