The Districts and Their Tributes Omar Awwa, Kosei Yamamoto, Jamil Lee

Setting The story The Hunger Games is set in a future country called Panem, which was formerly North America. There are 12 districts in Panem, and a ruling Capitol. The main character, Katniss Everdeen, lives in the Seam, in District 12. The Seam is where Panem gets most of their coal supplies. There is also a place called the Hob in District 12, the black market. This is where Katniss illegally sells food that she illegally hunted.

Characters  Katniss Everdeen- major, protagonist, dynamic  Peeta Mellark- major, protagonist, dynamic  Gale Hawthorne- minor, protagonist, dynamic  Haymitch Aberthany- minor, protagonist, dynamic  Primrose Everdeen- minor, protagonist, dynamic

C:Katniss Everdeen Katniss is a 16 year old girl who grew up in District 12, the poorest district in the nation of Panem. Her Dad died in a mine explosion years ago, and Katniss takes care of her mom and her sister, Prim(who is the only person that Katniss loves) now because her mom is too shocked to do anything. Katniss is very skilled at hunting with the bow and arrow. She goes to the Games because she volunteered when her sister got picked at the reaping.

C:Peeta Mellark Peeta is a baker's son, which makes him wealthier and better fed than most people in District 12. He has two older brothers and two parents. Peeta was in the same class as Katniss before going to the Hunger Games, and Peeta like-liked Katniss. He saved Katniss`s life when they were 11. Katniss and her family were starving because their father just died. Peeta intentionally burnt two loafs of bread, and when his Mom scolded him for burning the bread and told him to throw it out, he gave it to Katniss. Katniss feels guilty because she felt she owed Peeta, and she did not like owing people things.

C:Gale Hawthorne Gale is 18 years old, and Katniss Everdeen’s closest friend. He and Katniss often go hunting in the woods for food to eat or sell. His father was killed in the same mine explosion that killed Katniss's father, and he takes care of family too. He is a great hunter, particularly snares. He began hunting with Katniss when he was 13, and she was 11. He signs up for tesserae, which is a year worth of oil and grain in exchange for more names in the reaping, because his family is poor. At the 74 th reaping, he has about 50 names in the bowl.

C:Haymitch Abernathy Haymitch Abernathy is a paunchy, middle aged, and the only living victor of the Hunger Games from District 12. He is a drunk alcoholic. His goal is to lead Katniss and Peeta to victory in the Hunger Games.

C:Primrose Everdeen Primrose is Katniss’s little sister, nicknamed Prim. She is 12 years old, and looks a lot like her mother. She is thoughtful and sweet. She is a skilled healer, being taught her skills by her mother. When her name is pulled at the reaping, her sister volunteered to go instead.

P:Rising Action  Definition-The series of events that build up tension.  The rising action in the story is when Katniss volunteers to go to the Hunger Games, and when Katniss and the other tributes go into the arena

P:Climax  Definition- The turning point in the story with the highest tension  The climax is when the rules change and a girl and boy tribute from the same Districts can live, and find out that both Katniss and Peeta can live

P:Falling Action  Definition- The falling action is the point with the final suspense.  The falling action is when Katniss and Peeta try to eat the poisonous berries and get stopped, therefore having two victors.

C:Conflict  Man vs. Nature- When Katniss get’s chased by a large forest fire after a day’s rest in the arena.  Man vs. Society- When Katniss goes in the arena, and she has to kill every tribute around her.  Man vs. Self- When Katniss goes on an interview about herself, while the whole of Panem is watching her, and she has to fight her nervousness.

T:Theme and R:Resolution  The theme of the story is the lesson of the story. The theme in this story is that the having a democracy is much better that having a tyrant rule us. I think this because every year, 2 tributes from every district have to fight in a arena and try to kill everyone around them, as a punishment for rebelling against them. A quote from the book is: “The Treaty of Treason gave us the new laws to guarantee peace and, and as a yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never be repeated, it gave us the Hunger Games.”  A resolution is the solution of a story, The resolution of the story is when Katniss and Peeta both win the Hunger Games. It’s the resolution because it’s what Katniss and Peeta wanted, and the main problem was solved. All they wanted was to go home. This is a quote from the story; “Home! Prim and my mother! Even the thought of Prim’s scruffy old cat makes me smile. Soon I will be home!

Figurative Language Examples  Simile: “ The four adults are watching me like hawks.”  Metaphor: “Katniss, the girl on fire.”  Alliteration: “I noticed him, a boy with blond hair peering out from behind his mother’s back.”  Imagery: “I looked straight down the side of the building to the street, which is buzzing with people. You can hear their cars, an occasional shout, and a strange metallic tinkling.”  Personification: “ With both of us hunting daily, there are still nights when game has to be swapped for lard or shoelaces or wool, still nights when we go to bed with our stomachs growling.”  Onomatopoeia: “ Ahh!”
