Phonics and Word Recognition working with word families, silent e, vowel teams Fluency Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. This means that students need to be able to read 90 words per minute with 95% accuracy and be able to retell the main idea and three details from the story. Reading Standards for Literature and Informational Text Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of story. Retell stories. Describe how characters in a story respond to events and challenges. Describe the overall structure of a story, beginning, middle, end. Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story. Know and use various text features to locate key facts or information in a text. Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to explain, or describe.

Life Cycle of Butterflies and Mealworms Breath, Blood, & Guts States of Matter Weather Watching Science units will be taught in thematic units that will support the reading and the math standards.

American History Recognize that American colonists and Native American groups lived in the area of the Thirteen Colonies that was ruled by England. Social studies units will be taught in conjunction with reading skills that will be taught this year. World History Recognize that people in different places changed their form of government. Geography Recognize different types of maps. Recognize and locate characteristics of human and physical features. Civics/Government Describe the history and meaning of national symbols, documents, songs, and monuments that represent America.

Homework In 2nd Grade Each child will bring home a packet of homework every week with at least four days. Any week with less than four days, there will be no homework. Homework is for review and will not include new information or skills. They also need to be reading at least 15 minutes a night. This can be done both silently and aloud to a sibling or parent. Homework will be turned in every Friday. Please help your child complete their homework by making a special place for them to work and checking their work nightly.
