The Dewey Decimal System A system a library uses to put Non-Fiction books into categories or groups.

The Dewey Decimal System Non-Fiction books are arranged on the shelf by numbers on the spine label. There are 10 different categories or groups in the Dewey Decimal System. Numbers start at 000 and end at 999.

000 General Information In the 000 group of books you will find: Reference

Philosophy The 100s section of the Dewey Decimal System has books about feelings and thinking.

Religion The 200’s have books on Religions of the World: Christian Jewish Muslim Buddhist

Social Science Find books on government, education, holidays, legends, folk tales, and fairy tales in the 300’s Holidays (394) Fairy Tales (398)

Language Learn about all languages in the 400’s. Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and more English grammar (verbs, nouns, adjectives)

Science and Math The 500’s are non- fiction books that are about Science. Books about plants, planets, wild animals, weather and math Dinosaurs (567.9) Math (510)

Useful Arts If you want a book about making or doing useful things like cooking, health, transportation, safety, or pets, the 600’s are where to look.

Fine Arts The 700’s are books that deal with drawing, music, games, hobbies, and sports.

Literature Put on a play, Recite a poem Read short stories Tell a joke The 800’s are the place to be.

History The 900’s contain books on history, information about the United States, and facts about other countries.

The Dewey Decimal System Non-Fiction books use the Dewey Decimal System. The spine labels have numbers. The numbers tell what kind of books are in the category or group.
