What is an introduction? An introduction is how you start your essay in one paragraph An introduction gives your reader a chance to get to know the subject of your essay An introduction has THREE PARTS.

How do you start an introduction? Background information An interesting fact An interesting question So, Ms. Butler…what’s the point?

ATTENTION!

Bud, Not Buddy Openings Background information Example: Bud, Not Buddy is a book about an orphan trying to find his father in the time of the 1930’s Great Depression. An interesting fact Example: Jazz was first born in New Orleans, Louisiana, but it made its way to Michigan to become a big part of the story Bud, Not Buddy. An interesting question Example: Did you know that there are at least 143 million orphans in the world today?

How do you finish an introduction? A THESIS! You already wrote these in your Argumentative Packet and on the back of your circle map. Please check to see if it needs revision. Please copy this word for word when you are finishing your introduction. Make sure to finish with a period and to separate your reasons with commas.

So what goes in the middle? Connect your opening sentence to your thesis statement with 2 to 3 sentences Include a variety of background sentences or questions The whole introduction will be 5 sentences in length.

Example Introduction Set Up First Sentence: Opening Line Second through Fourth: Connecting Sentences Fifth Sentence: Thesis.

Example Introduction 1 Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis is a book about an orphan trying to find his father in the time of the 1930’s Great Depression. Bud does not have it easy because he lost his mother when he was very young. Although he is struggling, many people enter the story and they become a part of his journey. Some people he trusts while others he does not. Bud did need help along the way because Mr. Lewis helps him get to Grand Rapids, Miss Thomas listens to his story, and Herman eventually allows Bud to stay with him.
