Jesus’ Identity and the Mission of the 12 Luke 9: Presented by Bob DeWaay October 21, 2007

Questions about Jesus’ Identity Luke 3:22“This is My beloved Son” Luke 4:22“is this not Joseph’s son” Luke 5:21“who is this man who blasphemes” Luke 7:16“a great prophet has arisen” Luke 7:19“are You the expected one” Luke 7:39“if this man were a prophet” Luke 7:49“who is this man who forgives sins” Luke 8:25“who is this who commands the winds and water”

Jesus’ Identity revealed and concealed Luke 9:9“who is this man” (Herod asked) Luke 9:18“who do the multitudes say I am” Luke 9:20“who do you say I am” Luke 9:22“the son of man must suffer” Luke 9:35“this is My son... Listen to him” Luke 9:44“the Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men” Luke 9:45“they did not understand... It was concealed from them”

The apostles are “sent” Luke 9:1, 2 And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to heal diseases. And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God, and to perform healing.

They must depend on hospitality Luke 9:3, 4 And He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two tunics apiece. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and take your leave from there.”

A key issue in Luke/Acts: to “receive” or not “receive” Luke 9:5 “And as for those who do not receive you, as you go out from that city, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”

“Receive” dechomai in Luke/Acts Luke 8:13“receive the word... fall away” Luke 9:48“receives child... receives Me” Luke 9:53“they did not receive Him” Luke 10:8,10“receive... not receive” Luke 18:17“receive the kingdom like a child ” Acts 8:14“Samaria had received the word” Acts 11:1“Gentiles had received the word” Acts 17:11“[Bereans] received the word”

The apostles do what Jesus did Luke 9:6 And departing, they began going about among the villages, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere.

Herod hears conflicting reports Luke 9:7, 8 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others, that one of the prophets of old had risen again.

Herod wants an audience with Jesus Luke 9:9 And Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see Him.

The apostles “narrate” the works of God like the demoniac had (8:39) Luke 9:10 And when the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. And taking them with Him, He withdrew by Himself to a city called Bethsaida.

Jesus “fully receives” apodechomai the crowd Luke 9:11 But the multitudes were aware of this and followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing.

A test for the apostles Luke 9:12 And the day began to decline, and the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; for here we are in a desolate place.”

The enormity of the problem overwhelmed their faith Luke 9:13, 14a But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.” (For there were about five thousand men.)

They obey in spite of their lack of understanding Luke 9:14b,15 And He said to His disciples, “Have them recline to eat in groups of about fifty each.” And they did so, and had them all recline.

God opens table fellowship for all Luke 9:16, 17 And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the multitude. And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.

Applications and Implications 1) God will provide for us so that we may complete our mission 2) God has promised a lavish, Messianic banquet for all peoples 3) Those not properly prepared for the banquet will be excluded

1) God will provide for us so that we may complete our mission Luke 12:29, 30 “And do not seek what you shall eat, and what you shall drink, and do not keep worrying. For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things.”

1) God will provide for us so that we may complete our mission Luke 12:31, 32 “But seek for His kingdom, and these things shall be added to you. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.”

2) God has promised a lavish, Messianic banquet for all peoples Isaiah 25:6, 7 And the Lord of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain; A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, And refined, aged wine. And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering which is over all peoples, Even the veil which is stretched over all nations.

2) God has promised a lavish, Messianic banquet for all peoples Isaiah 25:8 He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken.

3) Those not properly prepared for the banquet will be excluded Matthew 22:11, 12 But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw there a man not dressed in wedding clothes, and he said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?” And he was speechless.

3) Those not properly prepared for the banquet will be excluded Revelation 19:7, 8 “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” And it was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

3) Those not properly prepared for the banquet will be excluded Romans 3:21, 22 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
