Hosea

Title: Hebrew – [:ve’Ah Greek – Wshe Latin – Osee

Author: Hosea

Date of Writing: Between 755 and 710 B.C.

Theme: God’s Love in the Midst of Israel’s Spiritual Adultery

Purpose of Writing: Hosea, like all the prophets, wrote to convince Israel of her sins and call her back into the true worship of God. If the country didn’t turn back, she would end up once again in slavery to another nation, just as she once had been in slavery to the nation of Egypt. Hosea tried to warn the people about this coming judgment, but they refused to listen.

Christ in Hosea: 1.The Offended Husband 2.The Prophecies

The Offended Husband

Prophecy: Hosea 6:1-2 "Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bandage us. 2 He will revive us after two days; He will raise us up on the third day, That we may live before Him.” “ He will raise us up on the third day …. ”

Prophecy: Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son. So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON."

Place in the Canon: Historically, Hosea is a window into the final days of the northern kingdom. Theologically, it shows us how great and loving and merciful God is and how sinful we are. Devotionally, Hosea prompts us to respond to God with humility and obedience.
