Topic: Chemistry Aim: Describe solubility and the different factors that affect it. Do Now: Homogeneous OR heterogeneous mixture? 1.Made up of large particles 2.The same throughout 3.Least mixed 4.Made up of small particles 5.Not the same throughout 6.Well mixed HW: Make test corrections AND get it signed!
Topic: Chemistry Aim: Describe solubility and the different factors that affect it. Do Now: Quiz. HW: 1. solubility factors foldable
Solubility The maximum amount of a substance that can be dissolved in a solvent at a given temperature (how well a solute dissolves)
Soluble substance: dissolves in another substance –Ex: Salt and sugar dissolve in water Insoluble substance: CANNOT dissolve in another substance –Ex: Mercury and oil cannot dissolve in water Sugar water solution Salt water solution
Obviously NOT soluble in water!!!!
A lava lamp depends on the globs not being soluble. It also depends on the globs being about the same density as water. It took years to develop the right ingredients to make a lava lamp work.
The motto regarding solubility is "Like Dissolves Like." For example, to clean off grease, use something that is greasy like vegetable oil or butter. I had one student say he noticed potato chips cleaned his hands. It must have been the oil in the chips.
This child has a clean face now, but after eating the cotton candy, it won't be. To clean off cotton candy we know that water would good for that, not oil. Remembering "Like Dissolves Like" we guess that water and sugar must be alike in some way.
Topic: Chemistry Aim: Describe the different factors that affect solubility. Do Now: Identify the number of protons, electrons and neutrons in a neutral atom of iron: HW: solubility foldable; quarterly next Thursday
Factors that affect solubility 1. Temperature: As temp of solvent increases, solubility of the solute increases (dissolves better)
All carbonated beverages are bottled under pressure to increase the carbon dioxide dissolved in solution. When the bottle is opened, the pressure above the solution decreases. As a result, the solution effervesces and some of the carbon dioxide bubbles off.
2. Particle size: the smaller the size, the greater the solubility powdered sugar sugar granules
3. Stirring: increases solubility
Let’s summarize… 1.Describe the term ‘solubility.’ 2.Describe the difference between a soluble and insoluble substance. 3.Describe at least three factors that can affect the solubility of a substance.
Which of the following would help sugar dissolve faster in water? a.stirring, the water b.decreasing the solubility of sugar c.using larger particles of sugar d.decreasing the water temperature
