NMC and King’s Fund Report; 28 January 2015 Recognition within the report and at NMC Council meeting that supervision of midwives has a wider role to play within the midwifery profession and is highly valued by many midwives.

Looking forward The LSAMO Forum UK notes the decision taken on Wednesday 28 January 2015 by the Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) Council 1 to accept the recommendation from the recent report, ‘Midwifery regulation in the United Kingdom’ (The King’s Fund, January 2015) 2, that statutory supervision should no longer be part of its legal framework. While this historic decision will affect the statutory aspect of supervision of midwives, it was clearly stated that supervision of midwives has a wider role to play within the midwifery profession and is highly valued by many midwives. The heart of midwifery practice is the care of the woman and her baby and it is important that the identified, valued aspects within supervision endure. The continuation of advocacy and supporting choice for women as well as supervisors’ contribution to midwifery support, development and leadership will enhance and influence future midwifery practice in the UK.

LSAMO Forum UK Legislative change whilst not immediate, will proceed as required. The LSAMO Forum UK welcomes the opportunity to work with the CNOs of the four countries of the UK during the transition period to ensure that what is good about the current framework of supervision of midwives continues to be integral to the provision of care to women and their families in the future. In the interim prior to legislative change, the LSA Midwifery Officers will endeavour to continue to meet the NMC statutory requirements and we look forward to working with women, supervisors of midwives, midwives, the CNOs and other health service stakeholders to help us achieve this aim.
