Metairie Academy for Advanced Studies WELCOME LEAP Information February 18, 2014

Question you’ve submitted: What is expected for phase one? How much of the test is on parts of speech? Do you have any sample tests that we can see? How can we help them at home? What resources should I use to help improve my child’s scores?

continued How do I best prepare my child for the LEAP specifically by each subject matter? Please describe the format for the LEAP test. Will MAAS be participating in the field test for PARCC this year? What are the implications of the 2014 LEAP test results on students?

School Preparation Goals Our goal is to have every student at Metairie Academy to do their best on the LEAP and achieve Mastery or Advanced in all four components of the test. Student preparation began the first day your child attended a Louisiana public school.

What does the LEAP measure? LEAP measures student progress toward meeting Louisiana’s content standards; more specifically, the Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) in science and social studies and Common Core Curriculum in ELA and math.

What kind of test is the LEAP? Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) is the series of annual assessments in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies in 4 th and 8 th grades. Known as a criterion-based test, these tests are aligned to the state academic standards and determine whether a student has mastered the content of the academic standards.

L.E.A.P. Achievement Levels ADVANCED – A student at this level demonstrated superior performance beyond the level of mastery. MASTERY – A student at this level has demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter and is well prepared for the next level of schooling. BASIC – A student at this level has demonstrated only the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for the next level of schooling. APPROACHING BASIC – A student at this level has only partially demonstrated the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for the next level of schooling. UNSATISFACTORY – A student at this level has NOT demonstrated the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for the next level of schooling.

L.E.A.P. Scaled Score Ranges LEAP GRADE 4 ELAMATHSCIENCESOC. ST. Achievement Level Scaled Score Range % % % % Advanced Mastery Basic Approaching Basic Unsatisfactory

L.E.A.P. Promotional Policy Schools always determine student promotion based on grades, attendance, etc. However, the state also has rules regarding the LEAP scores a student must earn in order to progress to 5 th grade, as outlined in Bulletin These rules will not change. However, for the next two years, districts will be given more flexibility to make decisions based on additional academic indicators beyond the LEAP test as the state transitions to the new assessments.Bulletin 1566
