2004 Literacy Initiative Components of the Senior Project Senior Project as a graduation requirement
I chose to research Senior Project because I was interested in three factors: Impact of the process on student learning Challenges faced by students Benefits students receive from completing Senior Project
In-depth research Skill acquisition Broader Perspective Opportunity to teach others
Anxiety Time management Learning new skills
Writing Formal vs. Informal Writing Length of paper Research skills Determining the correct sources Works cited and internal citations Paraphrasing, Quoting, Summarizing
Public speaking Note to students: I would not play the entire video. I would select a 30 second clip that makes my point effectively.
Schedule of assignments Proposal, Outline, Note chart, Drafts Staggered Due Dates Factors to consider
Academic Preparation Work Habits Hey Mrs. Steigman, I just wanted to inform you of some great news…I got my first English paper back and I got a 95 on it! Those annoying citations we had to learn really helped me out. - AC ‘14 This project has changed my work ethic. I used to wait until the last minute to do any work for school. Starting this major project made me nervous and overwhelmed. I was worried about missing due dates. Because I understood the importance of this project, I started working on assignments long before they were due so I would never have too much work at one time. - JL ‘15
Sense of Personal Achievement Meeting the Challenge Skill acquisition Senior project was a great experience! It has changed the way I approach my responsibilities and has opened my eyes to the importance of taking the initiative to get those assignments done as soon as possible. -KM ‘15 This experience has made me use and consider more resources when researching a topic. I now have a better ability of utilizing my communication skills in writing and in talking to people. The interview was both a new type of source that I used and it helped me improve my communication skills. – JZ ‘15
Although it is a stressful process for both students and teachers, the majority of students emerge from the Senior Project experience with stronger academic skills, more confident in their ability to handle challenges, and with new knowledge both about their topic and themselves. In addition to all of that great-sounding academic information, 99.9% of students express tremendous relief upon turning in their projects.
I hope this helps give you ideas about how much text to use and what needs to go on each slide. Your topics are probably more interesting than this one ;-). I look forward to seeing you present! Ms. S.
