A+ Certification PC Maintenance and Troubleshooting Chapter 1 Introduction (history of computers )

Chapter Overview The Development of the Computer The Role of a Computer Service Professional

The Abacus The abacus board is a mechanical aids used for counting; it is not a calculator in the sense we use the word today. The person operating the abacus performs calculations in their head and uses the abacus as a physical aid to keep track of the sums, the carrys, etc.

The Analytical Engine ( ) The analytical engine, an important step in the history of computers, it was the design of a mechanical general-purpose computer by the British professor of mathematics Charles Babbagehistory of computers computerCharles Babbage

It was design to receive instructions from punched cards, make calculations with the aid of memory bank and print out solutions to math problems

The First Electrically Driven Computer

The first practical use of punched cards for data processing is credited to the American inventor Herman Hollerith, who decided to use Jacquard's punched cards to represent the data gathered for the American census of 1890Herman HollerithJacquard's punched cards

The Digital Electronic Computer 1939: Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) 1943: Colossus I 1945: Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) 1960s–1970s: Golden era of the mainframe computer

Milestones of Modern Computing 1971: first 4-bit multiprocessor (MP)— 1 MHz 1978: first 16-bit MP 8086 and coprocessor : first PC by IBM (MS-DOS)—4.7 MHz 1986: first 32-bit computer— : first Pentium—i : processor speed exceeds 1 GHz HW1:

The Role of a Computer Service Professional Technician: troubleshoot hardware and software Scholar: continuously update skills and broaden knowledge Diplomat: cultivate good customer service skills

Chapter Summary The abacus was the first computing device. Charles Babbage conceived the first mechanical computer. The first electrical computer computed results of the 1890 United States census. The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (1939) was the first digital computer. Today’s computer service professional must be a technician, scholar, and diplomat.

solving up to 29 linear equations

The Colossus machines were early computing devices used by British codebreakers to read encrypted German messages during World War II.codebreakersWorld War II

ENIAC, short for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, it was the first large-scale, electronic, digital computer capable of being reprogrammed to solve a full range of computing problems

The 8087 was the first math coprocessor for 16 bit processors designed by IntelcoprocessorIntel

The IBM Personal Computer, commonly known as the IBM PC, was the original version and progenitor of the IBM PC compatible hardware platform. It was IBM model number 5150IBM PC compatibleplatform

The Intel is a microprocessor which was used as the central processing unit (CPU) of many personal computers from 1986 until 1994 and latermicroprocessorcentral processing unit (CPU)personal computers
