Pictures of Important People

Pearl Harbor – December 7,1941 Pearl Harbor, a navy base in Hawaii, was bombed by Japan. It was a surprise attack, and people on the island thought that is was the U.S. from the mainland. The Pacific Fleet suffered terrible damage. Thousands of soldiers and the navy were killed. FDR called war against Japan. This led the United States into the war.

D-day 200,000 soldiers invaded Normandy, France. This landing allowed the Allies begin to move toward Germany. Italy has lost.

VE-Day On VE-Day Allied powers made Germany surrender unconditionally. Before the Allies came in, Hitler committed suicide.

Iwo Jima During island hopping, the Allies captured Iwo Jima. It was near Japan, so they used it as a aircraft base. It helped the Allies drop the bomb on Hiroshima.

Rationing During the war, there were barely any goods. For example: gasoline, meat, and sugar were rationed. People sent the supplies to the soldiers in Europe.

Internment camps FDR, the president during WWII, put Japanese Americans in internment camps during the war. Although they were held prisoner, they were not treated harshly.

Atomic bomb Because Japan would not surrender, the U.S. dropped a bomb on Hiroshima. They still did not surrender, so we dropped another bomb on Nagasaki.

VJ-Day After the atomic bomb in Nagasaki, Japan surrendered unconditionally. This day was called VJ-Day. VJ-Day stands for Victory in Japan Day.

VE-Day On this day, the U.S. flew in over Normandy, France. They surrendered unconditionally. VE- Day stands for Victory in Europe day.

Holocaust This was a mass murder. The Nazi’s killed nearly 12 million people. ½ of those people were Jews. Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s economical problems, so he put them in concentration camps.

What you need to know… What caused the war in the first place? Germany’s dictator, Adolph Hitler, wanted to make Germany a stronger nation and country. He wanted to gain more country’s, so he did. Other nations, such as Great Britain, didn’t like this. They made an agreement that said that Germany couldn’t attack any more nations. On September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland. This led to WW2.

Some more things you need to know… What did everybody else do at home? Since the Pearl Harbor attack, we had to get ready to fight, or to mobilize. Since men were fighting in the war, African Americans and Woman had to build war supplies. Other people watched newsreels. A newsreel is a short film without sound that shows a clip of current events.
