Presentation transcript:

In 1584, Queen Elizabeth I gives Sir Walter Raleigh the charter in attempt to colonize Virginia.

In 1585, the first group of people went to the new world, unsuccessful, they tried again in 1587.

The second group ended up at Roanoke Island in 1587, the soil was rich and there was plenty of lumber, soon, they had fields of corn and potatoes and houses.

On August 18, 1587, John White, the leader of the colony, his daughter gave birth to a baby girl, Virginia Dare.

In 1588, John White claimed that he would sail back to England to get more supplies that the colony needed, if they left, they would care the name of the place they evacuated or moved to.

The war with the Spanish that was currently going on with the English delayed the ship for three more years.

In 1590, the ship finally arrived with the supplies and John White found the island deserted.

The only clue John White found as to their disappearance were the letters C-R-O or the word Croatoan carved on a tree or a rock or a skull, but before an investigation could be launched, a hurricane struck and forced them to leave.

There are more than a few theories about the colonists, maybe the Native Americans kidnapped them, maybe the colonist married and lived with the Native Americans, or maybe they moved to another island.

My idea is that a tribe of Native Americans took Virginia Dare and her mom along with all the women and children captive and killed the men because of arguments of something and carved “Croatoan” to throw John White off course to getting them.
