Communication Climate Notice the title—no “and”... Actually all the chapters are merely characterizes of communication and not that they are separate from. The guiding question here is “does the climate control the people or visa versa? So, what is climate?—once again from Dan’s perspective which he gathered from others. - Context -Atmosphere -Mood

Who are the others? Adler and Towne: Climate or (Context?) John Stewart: A Spiritual Child Lloyd Bitzer: A Rhetorical Situation Some examples: -At the University of Oregon, Kent State and the Police “a rhetorical situation” -At St. James—a place for losers -The average home—what’s the climate?

So, climate be controlled? The text and I believe it can. If we can create it, feel the results of it, why not change it? So... How? The text suggests in two ways: 1.Confirming Messages: -Recognition: letters, a call -Acknowledgement: listening -Endorsement: agreeing

Climate be controlled By: Avoiding disconfirming messages: -Impervious responses: not returning phone calls (cooling off times) -Interrupting responses: cutting off -Irrelevant responses: changing subjects -Tangential responses: piggy backing -Impersonal responses: abstract language -Ambiguous responses: saying “I love you” and turning away at the same time” -Incongruous responses: two messages 3.Can you think of other ways to change the climate?

Concluding Remarks on Communication Climate 1. The case of my opening comments upon seeing my wife coming through the door after a hard days work. 2. What the is climate not only affects interpersonally relations, but national and international relations. The media as channel becoming message.
