WP 5: Innovations in virus resistance: Improvement of the genetic control of viruses and vectors HELSINKI Meeting 05. –

WP 5 Objectives: To form contacts with key organisations involved in policymaking Hold two workshops among members and invited organisations To increase European students’ appreciation of these topics through 2 best paper from a thesis competitions Decide on what can be implemented in the short, medium, and long term, balancing the needs of crop producers with the interests of consultants, the biotechnology industry and virologists To produce a report on the latest developments on plant virus/vector related problems for circulation to interested stakeholders HELSINKI 5. –

Task 5.1 : CSLDEFRA will carry out the first key task of this work package, which will be to form initial contacts with all organisations involved with the formation of future policies on the use of GM and traditionally-bred crops, and other new biotechnologies aimed at developing crops resistant to plant pathogenic viruses/vectors, at European and national levels. This will be done through the use of existing contacts, web searches, phone calls to main bodies such as the European Commission, national governments, NGOs, and so on. Number of activated contacts/Actions taken HELSINKI 5. –

WP 5 Task 5.1: Collection of addresses organized by Bellinda Phillipson (CSL- DEFRA) Total number of contributions: Expected contributions Actions taken: 96 contacts HELSINKI 5. –

Task 5.1: Complete the address list with a potential auditorium: To be invited to Workshops with public character To be informed regularly via Webpage updates To be addressed in particular occasions (PR activities) HELSINKI 5. –

Task 5.2: 1. Workshop “Advances in sources, mechanisms and durability of resistance against plant viruses and vectors” in Alicante organized by Miguel Aranda (CEBAS-CSIC Murcia) Total number of participants: 122 Invited speakers: 8 Public attendance: 59 Resist Vir Members: 55 HELSINKI 5. –

Task 5.2: 1. Workshop “Advances in sources, mechanisms and durability of resistance against plant viruses and vectors” in Alicante organized by Miguel Aranda (CEBAS-CSIC Murcia) Session 1: Resistance genes and breeding for resistance Chair: A. Maule Session 2: Plant/Virus/Vector interactions Chair: P. Palukaitis Session 3: Silencing Chair: M. Wassenegger Session 4: Resistance durability Chair: F. Garcia Arenal Closing Remarks: M. Tepfer HELSINKI 5. –

Task 5.3: MTT and UOC will organise one competition per year, to select the best paper from a doctoral thesis published between Months 1-11 (year 1), and Months (year 2), designed to stimulate interest in the field from postgraduate students and recently qualified postdoctoral scientists. The prizes will be awarded on the topic of each workshop in each year. As part of the prize, all expenses incurred in attending the workshop will be reimbursed. The main prize will be an all expenses paid trip to a non- ResistVir conference of the winner’s choice. This competition will be advertised on the web site and as part of the publicity for the workshops. Actual stage: Alan Schulman and Mina Tsagris have selected the first winner HELSINKI 5. –

Task 5.4: Perform an investigation into bottlenecks to implementation and obstacles to change. These issues must be discussed at the workshops. UBonn, with the assistance of UHel and CAU, will perform an investigation into bottlenecks to implementation and obstacles to change. Total contributions: Expected contributions at the next Workshop (M 24) Actions to take HELSINKI 5. –

Task 5.4: ICGEB will organize, prepare and participate in a workshop on “Innovative approaches, including transgenic resistance, to control plant viruses/vectors”. To plan the next Workshop: at month 24 to be organised by Mark Tepfer (ICGEB) at Ca´ Tron Expected contributions Actions to take: Mark Tepfer HELSINKI 5. –
