NPSS Membership Development Update/Report to AdCom During 2009, Membership Development (MD), consisting of the Membership Development Committee and an International Team of Recruiters, was enlarged to include people from several IEEE regions. Excellent results have resulted from this change. Membership Recruitment at Conferences is being completed for 2009, right here and today, at the Orlando2009 NSS/MIC. Then: focus on Membership Retention, and planning for Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

NPSS Membership Development Committee (in alphabetic order) Uwe Bratzler (MD Chair) Peter Clout and Scott Fisher (Officers – MD Materials and Shipments) Christoph Ilgner (Immedidate past MD Chair) Vernon Price (Officer – MD Contact to IEEE HQ and to NPSS Treasurer) International Team of (12) Recruiters (2009, in alphabetic order) Uwe Bratzler (Germany, CERN and Tokyo/Japan) Dennis Brown (USA) Filimon Roukoutakis (CERN and Athens/Greece) Christoph Ilgner (CERN and Dortmund/Germany) Dan Jobe (USA) Albe Larsen (USA) Patric Le Du (France) Jean-Luc Leray (France) Vernon Price (USA) Altynay Togambayeva (Kazakhstan) Forest White (USA) Jie Wu (Germany and China) Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

Results from Recruitment at 2009 Conference 1.Particle Accelerator Conference, Vancouver Canada Uwe Bratzler, Jie Wu: 249 Recruits 2.Real-time Conference, Beijing China -- Alberta Larsen: 42 Recruits 3.Conference on Plasma Science, San Diego, California Dan Jobe, F. 7  732 NPSS Membership applications actually submitted to IEEE HQ in 2009*** Note: The actual number of people recruited was even higher, e.g. in Vancouver not 249 but 270  difference (21) were either not-readable contact addresses, or not qualifying applications.  The estimated total of people ‘recruited’ on our 2009 Membership Booths was close to 1,000 (!) --- which was about 1/3 of our then current NPSS Membership of ~3,000. Since, of course, not everybody we talked to “had to” join…  That means: ~ thousands of individual conversations, informing about IEEE and our Society to our worldwide community in 2009! ***the number of then accepted applications, send by us (Vernon Price) to IEEE HQ may then be yet somewhat smaller due to some additional rejections. Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

Update on NPSS Membership Statistics* (from Sep2009 MD Report) Higher Grade Members 2009: 3, : 2,934 Change: Number: +349 Percent: +11.9% Student Members: 2009: : 72 Change: Number: +7 Percent: +9.7% Totals (with Affiliates) 2009: 3,413** 2008: 3,054 Change: Number: +359 Percent: +11.8% Totals (without Affiliates) 2009: 3, : 3,006 Change: Number: +356 Percent: +11.8% Affiliates 2009: : 48 Change: Number: +3 Percent: +6.3% **Including newly recruited members in October, at Orlando2009 NSS/MIC (as of Oct 29, 2009: >170): ~3,600+ (~17%); 2 nd largest growth of all IEEE Societies. Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

Membership Statistics by IEEE Region Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

NPSS Membership by Region As of Sept 2009 Region # Northeastern USA - Region Eastern USA - Region Southeastern USA - Region Central USA - Region Southwestern USA - Region Western USA - Region Canada - Region 7 93 Europe, Middle East, Africa - Region Latin America - Region 9 40 Asia & Pacific - Region Grand Total 3413  63% North America (R1-7), 37% from outside North America (Regions ) *Data from IEEE HQ MD/John Day. Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

How the “IEEE Membership Year” 2009 Closed: Orlando2009 NSS/MIC added another ~200 new NPSS Members (another record). Bringing our total NPSS Membership to 3,600+ (an all-time high), with over 700 new NPSS members gained in Retention Efforts: Article for New Members in December 2009 Newsletter Membership Development Website (with section for New Members, with all recruited in 2009 listed by name. Letter by NPSS President -Letter by NPSS President  NOT Enough… Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

Towards Cut-Off Date (Feb 28, 2010) About 900 NPSS Members did not pay their dues, and got ‘kicked out’ by the IEEE System Of these 900, about 500 were newly recruited members BUT, also, about 400 were “established” members!  We need to discuss and understand this, and do something!

28 Feb: 2, Dec: 3,672 Decline Increase 2009  2010 Transition: Strongest Increase Expect for 2010  2011 Transition: Will start year 2010 with 3,000+ NPSS Members! Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

Feedback from AdCom Retreat Participants (March 4, 2010): 1.TC Chair will receive names and addresses from newly signed up members at “his/her” conference about 1 months after the conference. Then TC Chair will write a Welcome Letter to these newly signed up members, offering involvement in that Technical Committee’s activities, e.g. with running of the following year’s conference, etc. 2.Conference-specific recruitment  TC-specific retention activities. 3.Add an “NPSS Student Committee” to organize events at conferences 4.Stimulate formation of “CIP’s” (like we have one for the NSS/MIC) for all other TC’s/Conferences 5.Have poster sessions at conferences for students only. NPSS (New) Member Retention Activities Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

6.Coordinate Recruitment/Retention activities with GOLD activities, and vice- versa/have common events (e.g., like at Orlando2009 NSS/MIC). 7.Give new NPSS student members task of Session Chair Assistant at Conferences. 8.Let new NPSS students organize (and run) sessions at Conferences. 9.Write (friendly/convincing) letter to those conference committee members, who are not IEEE/NPSS members, to join. 10.Do not “require” to be an IEEE/NPSS member to have any function at conferences but, rather, show and demonstrate (from our NPSS side) that it’s a ‘good thing’ to be IEEE/NPSS member, e.g. by having receptions for IEEE/NPSS members only, that IEEE/NPSS members write it below their name on publications, etc. Feedback from AdCom Retreat Participants (continued): Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March 2010.

11.Use membership booths for more than “just” recruitment, e.g. have a computer there which all conference participants can use (e.g. to check their membership status) and, if applicable, extend it. Offer to use skype/free phone calls, for calls home, etc. 12.Three-year transition for students to full membership (dues). 13.Receptions/events for students only to make contacts and establish new networks. 14.Make part of (non-IEEE members) conference registration fee pay for attendees IEEE and NPSS’s (and APS’s, where applicable) membership fees. 15.Receptions for (new) IEEE/NPSS members only. Feedback from AdCom Retreat Participants (continued):  Vernon Price and Uwe Bratzler will stay in close contact with TC Chairs, and NPSS President concerning these activities throughout of Uwe Bratzler, IEEE NPSS Membership Development Chair – Monterey AdCom Meeting, 6 March Question to AdCom: Costs, Financial Support for Events at Conferences?
