Munich:"München mag Dich" by Dirk

General Information Capital City of Baveria Third Largest City in Germany behind Berlin and Hamburg Population: 1,330,440 The year 1158 is assumed to be the foundation date of Munich because that is the earliest date that the city is mentioned in any documents. Its native name is München, which is derived from the Old High German Munichen, which means Monks Place. The city's name derives from the monks of the Benedictine order who founded the city. Modern Munich is a financial and publishing hub, and a frequently top-ranked destination for migration and ex-patriate location in livability rankings.

Geography Munich lies on the elevated plains of Upper Baveria on the Northern edge of the Alps at an altitude of about 520m(1706ft). Climate is strongly affected by the proximity to the Alps, precipitation is high and the temperature between day and night, or summers and winters can be extreme. Rain storms often come violently and unexpectedly A warm downwind wind from the Alps can change the temperature in a matter of hours, even in the winter. Winters last from December to March and Summers last from May until September. Munich experiences cold Winters with January being the coldest month. Summers are fairly warm, in the warmest month of July the average temp is about 23 °C (73 °F).

Economy Munich has the strongest economy of any German city and the lowest unemployment rate. Munich holds the headquarters to BMW, Siemens AG, MAN AG, Linde, Allianz, Munich Re, and Rohde & Schwarz. In 2006 the average Blue-Collar worker in Munich made an average hourly wage of 18.62 Euros($26). Munich is the largest publishing center in Germany. Munich is home to Süddeutsche Zeitung one of Germanys largest daily newspapers and is also home to Germanys largest public broadcasting network ARD. Munich is also home to Bavaria Film Studios which is one of Europe's biggest and most famous film production studios.

Transportation Munich International airport is the local airport and it is the second largest airport in Germany, behind Frankfurt Munich has one of the most comprehensive and punctual public transportation systems in the world. It includes the Munich U-Bahn, Munich S-Bahn, trams and buses. Munich is an integral part of the motorway network in Southern Germany, roads from all over end in Munich which allows direct access to different parts of Germany, Austria, and Italy. Cycling is starting to be recognized as an alternative mean of transportation and the growing number of bicycle lanes are being used throughout the year.

Architecture Munich has an inspiring mix of historic buildings and impressive architecture. At the center of the city there is the Marienplatz which is a large open square, the Old and New town hall are located here. The Frauenkirche which is the most famous building in the city center is also located at the Mrienplatz city center. Munich features a wide and diverse array of modern architecture, although strict height limitations for buildings have limited the construction of skyscrapers.
