Finding Mass, Volume, and Density
Mass The amount of matter in an object Measured in grams (g), milligrams (mg) or kilograms (kg) Stays the same unless matter is removed or added.

Volume Measures the amount of space an object occupies. 1ml = 1 cm 3 Milliliters and Liters for measuring Liquids ( ml, l) Cubic Centimeters for measuring the volume of solids (cm 3 )
Volume Rectangular Solids To find the volume of a rectangular solid: Length x Width x Height Find the volume of a cubic centimeter. Find the volume of five other rectangular solids. ObjectLength cm Width cm Height cm Volume cm 3
Volume Liquids To find the volume of a liquid, use a beaker or a graduated cylinder. Choose a graduated cylinder to find the following volumes of water, and draw a picture of it in your science notebook. 10 ml, 50 ml, 100 ml, 32 ml, 5 ml
Volume Irregularly Shaped Solids 1 ml = 1 cm 3 Water Displacement Method 1. Pour water into a graduated cylinder 2. Write down the amount of water 3. Place the object into the water 4. Record the new water level 5. Record the number of ml that the water level changed 6. Change ml to cm 3

Density Density is a relationship between mass and volume. D= Density g/cm 3 M= Mass (g) V= Volume (ml) Mass / Volume = Density
Density Calculate Density 1) A rock has a mass of 25 grams. It’s volume is 5cm 3. Calculate the density of the rock. 2) A book has a mass of 500 grams. The volume of the book is 100cm 3.
