Our eyes How do they work? Why protect them? What can we do to look after them?

How do our eyes work? Our eyes are like cameras! They take pictures of the world around us and send the pictures to our brain. Then our brain works out what our eyes are seeing.

What do you notice about this picture?

How do our eyes work? The light passes through the lens of your eye and the information is sent to the back of your eye (the retina). This information is then sent to your brain Which turns it the right way.

Why should we protect our eyes? Our eyes are very precious to us as they help us see the world around us. You can often tell how people are feeling from their eyes too. What would happy eyes look like? What about sad or angry?

What can we do to look after them? Can you think how we can keep our eyes healthy? Talk to a partner about what you do?

What can we do to look after them? Turn on lights when it's getting dark, particularly if you are reading a book. Always wear sunglasses on bright days. Tell your parent if your eyes are hurting. Tell your teacher if you can't see the interactive whiteboard clearly. Tell your teacher if the text is not clear.

What can we do to look after them? Wear glasses if you need them. Don't wear other people's glasses. Don’t play on the computer for too long – your eyes may get sore. Looking directly at the sun (or any really bright light, including lightning) can damage your eyes.

What can we do to look after them? Rubbing your eye if you get something in it can hurt your eye, so ask an adult to help you or wash your eyes with water until it feels better. Lastly, make sure that you have your eyes tested regularly – just like you go to the dentist to get your teeth checked. How many did you guess?

What if my eyes don’t feel right? Your grown-ups will probably book for you to have your eyes tested. This does not hurt, and It helps to find out if there is anything wrong. You may need to see a special eye doctor (optician)

What might happen next? Your optician may ask you to: do special eye exercises. wear glasses. wear contact lenses.
