CLASSROOM PROCEDURES Mr. Garbus Classroom Global Village Academy 5 th Grade Math Global Village Academy 5 th Grade Math Aurora, Colorado

FOREWORD Welcome to Mr. Garbus’s (Mr. G if you prefer) math class. I am here to teach math; you are here to learn math. I will do my job; you will do yours, and we will together use this year wisely and beneficially. Positive attitude and perseverance are the keys to math success. Let’s all work towards that!! Do not hesitate to ask for help or come to me if you are having any issues

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS GOLDEN RULE- treat others like you want to be treated COURTEOUS AT ALL TIMES SAFE AT ALL TIMES RESPONSIBLE AT ALL TIMES RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS AND THE CLASSROOM AT ALL TIMES ACTIVE LISTENING FOLLOW DIRECTIONS THE FIRST TIME THEY ARE GIVEN

WHY DO WE HAVE PROCEDURES? A procedure is the way that we do things. To do things right, we have to follow some simple procedures, for example: To sharpen your pencil, put the pencil in the sharpener and hold it in place until the pencil is sharp. To enter the classroom, you will greet the teacher at the door, walk quietly to your desk, get all your materials out and begin working on the Problem of the Day. So, to be successful in learning, you need to follow some simple procedures.

ENTRANCE Make sure you have all necessary materials for the class. Enter the classroom quietly. Place your popsicle stick name in attendance container so I know who is absent. Go directly to your assigned seat. Take all necessary materials out (backpacks under your seat) and begin working quietly on Problem of the Day. Homework should be out on desk.

PROBLEM OF THE DAY (POD) Immediately start the POD that will be written on the board when you get to your desk Work quietly and independently Do the POD in your math notebook or scratch piece of paper (write name, date, POD # at the top) Share your strategy and solution with neighbor quietly if you are done Sit quietly and wait for Anchor Task directions

MATH BLOCK (90 MINUTES) Structure of our Math Block on a daily basis: POD/Homework Check (5 minutes) Anchor Task (20 minutes) Guided Instruction (10 minutes) Guided Practice (10 minutes) Station Work (30 minutes) SPRINTS (10 minutes) Clean Up (5 minutes)

DURING INSTRUCTION Listen to the teacher with full attention. No pencil sharpening, restroom breaks, talking, whispering or moving from your seat Take any notes (especially if Mr. G is modeling problems on the board) Raise your hand for relevant questions Ask questions related to the subject. Other questions which are not related to the subject can be asked after instruction After instruction, make sure you understand the concept. If not, ask questions by mentioning which part you did not understand

WHILE YOU ARE WORKING Make sure you read or listen to the directions about your work and understand them. If you did not understand, ask for help from other students sitting around you. If they also don’t understand, raise 1 finger to ask teacher. If you are asked to help, be polite and kind and offer your best help Talking to each other should be no louder than a whisper Respect each other and be friendly. Use your time wisely. Put forth your best effort to finish your work on time.

EVERYDAY MATH MATERIALS Everyday Materials: MATH JOURNAL – used for Daily Anchor Tasks (date and Anchor Task # on every page), POD’s and taking notes MATH FOLDERS 3 SHARPENED PENCILS SINGAPORE MATH TEXTBOOK AND WORKBOOK (NAMES ON BOTH) OPTIONAL MATERIALS: colored pencils, ruler, calculator, protractor, markers; scissors

IF MR. G CLAPS: Stop what you are doing immediately. Repeat same clap pattern as Mr. G in unison. Face the teacher and wait silently to listen carefully to directions. No talking or whispering. All of your attention should be given to the teacher.

AFTER YOU ARE DONE Double check your work and the directions one more time to see if you missed anything or did something incorrectly. If the assignment is to be turned in, raise your hand so that Mr. G can pick up your work. You may work quietly on homework or help others

MATH TALK (WHOLE CLASS OR GROUP DISCUSSIONS) ACTIVE LISTENING TO TEACHER AND CLASSMATES MATHEMATICAL VOCABULARY WHEN SHARING ASK MATHEMATICAL QUESTIONS NO JUDGEMENTS SUMMARIZE/REPHRASE OTHERS’ IDEAS AND/OR STRATEGIES EXPLAIN AND JUSTIFY YOUR SOLUTIONS (use pictures, diagrams, explanations, manipulatives, bar models) SITTING STILL RAISE HAND PATIENTLY IF YOU WANT TO SHARE

HOMEWORK PROCEDURE You will be given homework on a daily basis (Monday-Thursday) Copy down homework in your student planners (it will be written on board) Bring it back the next day with your name on it (DO YOUR BEST to complete it) If you are not able to do homework, write Mr. G a note explaining why you could not (signed by parents)

WORKING IN MATH STATIONS Must have your math notebooks and Math Station folders for any station you are working at Respect the materials you are working with (Read directions for games, place materials back where they belong when you are done) If working with a partner: work quietly, work cooperatively, stay on task Clean up immediately when it’s time to switch Transition to next station quietly and get right to work Keep track of your work in your Station Log Do not interrupt Mr. G and his group

PROBLEM- SOLVING Math is all about solving problems, here are tips to keep in mind:

RESTROOM PROCEDURE USED ONLY DURING STUDENT WORK TIME (NOT DURING MR. G’S INSTRUCTION TIME, unless of an emergency) ONE AT A TIME Put 2 fingers in air (symbol for restroom) and wait for a nod from me WRITE INITIALS AND TIME OUT ON BOARD USE RESTROOM, wash hands with soap before returning WRITE TIME IN ON BOARD UPON YOUR RETURN

CONSEQUENCES Verbal Warning (Yellow) My Action Plan Form (Red) Student Conference w/ Teacher (Student and teacher make Home Contact) Student/Parent Conference w/ Teacher Referral to Administration

HAVE A WONDERFUL, ENJOYABLE YEAR! Mr. Garbus
