WHAT IS NHS?  National Honor Society is a national organization based on service, leadership, scholarship, and character. It is a great way to become more involved in your school and community, and colleges love to see it on applications.

WHO CAN JOIN?  Students become eligible to join NHS after the fall semester of their sophomore year. Additionally, students must have attended KHS for at least one semester.

WHEN CAN I JOIN?  Next semester! We will be accepting packets from January 11 th to February 12 th !

HOW DO I JOIN?  Go to the NHS page of the KHS website. (Found under “Activities.” Find the “Interested in joining NHS?” tab and print out the Activity Packet. Fill this out and turn it in at the beginning of next semester!

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?  The requirements are listed on the activities packet, and can be found Appendix A of the National Honor Society Appendices.  The Activity Packet also explains everything that is necessary to join.

HOW CAN I EARN SERVICE HOURS?  Be involved! Join clubs and organizations, and help out your community.  Church groups or volunteer groups are great places to earn hours.  The Houston Food Bank is a great place to volunteer.  If you have questions about what can count – me Tell me you’re doing the Activity Packet! Otherwise I’ll send your away!

HOW DO I EARN LEADERSHIP POINTS?  Come to our leadership seminar! November 18 th from 3:30 to 5:30 in the LGI.  Be an officer in clubs/organizations.  HOSA’s leadership conference is another popular leadership point opportunity.  See activity packet for other options.

HOW DO I EARN CHARACTER POINTS?  Character points are calculated based on teacher and principal evaluations and a student's conduct record. Teachers, staff members, and principals are asked to evaluate a student's character in the areas of attitude, integrity, and behavior. Additionally, students applying for NHS cannot have more than one Thursday/Saturday class, nor can they have a documented cheating incident.  Be good

WHAT ACTIVITIES COUNT FOR MY ACTIVITY PACKET?  Any activity completed from the summer preceding the student's ninth grade year and on may be counted towards the Activity Packet. However, hours and events from middle school will not count.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T GET IN?  You can apply again! We will send a letter that tells you which areas you need to improve in, and, unless you are a senior now, you can apply again next year.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO GET IN?  An induction ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 5 th, at 6:30 PM.  If you’d like to run for an officer position, an informational meeting on that will be held on April 14 th.  First mandatory meeting will be April 28 th after school in the auditorium. Elections will take place at this time.

WHAT IF I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?  Ask them now!!!  Or…. me at  I hope to see you all in NHS next year.
