Combining Sentences Insert what you need.

Comma and a conjunction Sometimes you will use a comma and a conjunction to join two sentences. This is a long trip, so we packed plenty of food. You make the fire, and I will put up the tent.

Comma and a conjunction * Only use a comma if there are two complete sentences. I love spaghetti and meatballs. Sarah will raise her hand and ask the question.

It’s foggy outside. I can barely see the road. This backpack is really bulky. It is not heavy.

Combining Sentences l One way to combine sentences is to pull a key word from one sentence and insert it into the other sentence. l Sometimes you can just add the word to the first sentence and drop the second sentence. l Other times you must change the form of the word first.

Inserting Words l Using the key word in the same form. -Dr. Martin Luther King was a civil rights leader. He was an American. -Dr. Martin Luther King was an American civil rights leader.

Inserting Words l Changing the form of the word. -He was famous for his brilliant speeches. His fame was international. -He was internationally famous for his brilliant speeches.

l Jack is from Italy. He is a chef. l I saw a movie last night. It was scary.

Combining Sentences l Often you can combine two related sentences by taking an entire group of words from one sentence and adding it to the other sentence.

My mom loves to clean the house. She also loves to wash the dishes. Every morning I get up and take a shower. I like to eat breakfast, too.

Semicolon Use a semicolon to join two complete sentences. Our team won the game; we were excited. Our team won the game; however, our star player got injured.

Inserting Groups of Words Tonight I want to play video games. I have lots of homework to do. I rode my bike when I wasn’t supposed to. I got in trouble when my parents found out.

Examples 1. Apples are my favorite fruit. I love the red ones. 2. That bakery sells fresh bread. The baker wakes up at 4:00 A.M. to start the dough. 3. My shoelace came untied during the race. I had to stop and tie it again.

More Examples 4. The cheerleading competition was Saturday. It was in Nashville, TN. 5. The basketball team beat Mt. Juliet. They are the national champions.

More Examples 6. The players were all amatuers. They were in the first organized baseball league. 7. Mike will cook the main course. Mike will buy dessert.

More Examples 8. The drawbridge was pulled up. The enemy knights could not get into the castle.
