Circular Reasoning By: Logan Witty and Kacie Martin

Definition a use of reason in which the premises depends on or is equivalent to the conclusion, a method of false logic by which "this is used to prove that, and that is used to prove this“ Begging the Question is a fallacy in which the premises include the claim that the conclusion is true or (directly or indirectly) assume that the conclusion is true.

Universal Example 6nxhU 6nxhU Elaine wants a changed number instead of a new number, but a new number and a changed number are the same.

The Crucible Elizabeth (to Hale): I cannot think the Devil may own a woman’s soul, Mr. Hale, when she keeps an upright way, as I have. I am a good woman, I know it; and if you believe I may do only good work in the world, and yet be secretly bound to Satan, then I must tell you, sir, I do not believe it. Hale: But woman, you do believe there are witches in- Elizabeth: If you think that I am one, then I say there are none Hale: You Surely do not fly against the Gospel, the Gospel- Act 2, page Fallacy committed- Circular Reasoning 2.Character committing fallacy- Elizabeth 3.The Problem- Elizabeth believes that she is not a witch. Therefore if she believes that she is not a witch, then witches do not exist.

The Crucible Hathorne's Voice: Now, Martha Corey, there is abundant evidence in our hands to show that you have given yourself to the reading of fortunes. Do you deny it? Martha Corey's Voice: I am innocent to a witch. I know not what a witch is. Hathorne's Voice: How do you know, then, that you are not a witch? Matha Corey's Voice: If i were, I would know it. Act 3, page Fallacy committed- Circular Reasoning 2.Character committing fallacy- Martha Corey 3.Problem- Martha says she is innocent to a witch. That is the same thing as saying she does not know what a witch is.
