Introduction to the 2 nd Draft of the Next Generation Science Standards January 15, 2013 Kevin J. B. Anderson, Ph.D. CESA #2 STEM Education Consultant

Welcome! … to the CESA #2 workshop on the Next Generation Science Standards. Take 2 minutes to introduce yourselves at your tables and discuss your goals for today’s meeting.

Meeting norms Overview of the day  NGSS background  Changes for the 2 nd draft  Structural elements overview  Review by grade level  Review CCSS connection, course sequences  Review appendices Q & A Norms and Agenda

What are we building upon?

A-Science Connections B-Nature of Science C-Science Inquiry D-Physical Science E-Earth and Space Science F-Life and Environmental Science G-Science Applications H-Science in Personal and Social Perspectives You’ve probably seen this A-H list.

Research on learning science has moved forward.

Research grew into a framework.

The framework guides the NGSS. “90% of what is in the Framework will be in the NGSS” --Stephen Pruitt

Conceptual shifts in the NGSS 1.K-12 Science Education should reflect the interconnected nature of science as it is practiced and experienced in the real world. 2.The Next Generation Science Standards are student performance expectations – NOT curriculum. 3.The science concepts build coherently from K The NGSS focus on deeper understanding of content as well as application of content. 5.Science and engineering are integrated in the NGSS from K–12. 6.The NGSS and Common Core State Standards ( English Language Arts and Mathematics) are aligned.

95% of the Performance Expectations have been rewritten, with more specific and consistent language A review focused on college- and career-readiness resulted in the removal of some content Some content shifted grade levels in elementary Engineering has been better integrated into the traditional science disciplines More math expectations have been added to the performance expectations “Nature of science” concepts have been highlighted throughout the document The Science and Engineering Practices matrix has been revised to provide more clarity What has changed since May?

Structure of the NGSS

Activity 1 – Group review of standards What do think of the content for your students? For example, will it engage them? Is the content appropriate for your grade level? Are the performance expectations too prescriptive or too vague? Give some examples. How well do the performance expectations connect to the crosscutting concepts, practices, and disciplinary core ideas?

Let’s look at the resources on the NGSS website -

Activity 2 - Course sequence and CCSS connections MS/HS groups – go to appendix J What do you think of the course sequences laid out? Pros/cons? What are the opportunities and challenges presented by these sequences? ES groups – go to appendix K Assess the quality of the proposed connections. Useful? Make sense? Any missing? Would they lead to an integrated lesson? Why or why not?

Activity 3 - Appendices Review How useful is this appendix for improving science instruction and curriculum? How would you use it in your work? Is there anything you’d like to see in this appendix that isn’t there? Chart paper – Share (recorder, reporter)

Activity 4 – Support? What supports do we need to implement these standards? * Consider school structures, curriculum and materials, professional development, etc.

Questions? Final feedback – collect pages Fill out the survey (by Jan 29): Final release – March 2013 Collecting feedback and Q&A

Contacts and resources Please give me some feedback on this workshop and let me know what will be helpful moving forward. me any time: Resources: practices, ccc webinars!
