Your train back home for Christmas vacation leaves at 16.10; the journey takes 2½ hours. What time do you arrive home? You look after “John”, who receives 50ml of fluid per hour by intravenous infusion (‘drip’); he also drinks 5 glasses of water, each of 150ml. After 24 hours fluid ‘output’ is recorded as 1375ml.
