Motivation (1/2) The human population and industrialization of countries continue to grow; as a consequence, the fresh water is becoming very scarce and expensive. Some arid regions of the world are already facing the reality that a shortage of fresh water can affect their economic development and the comfort of their population.

Motivation (2/2) These arid regions match with the necessity of fresh water and the abundance of solar resources; therefore, solar desalination systems could be a suitable solution in these arid and sunny regions.

Objectives Study different seawater desalination technologies. Compare different seawater desalinization technologies operated with electrical energy with desalination technologies operated using solar thermal energy. The analysis will include comparative energy performance, fresh water yield, system capital cost, and system space requirements. An extension of the comparison will be to consider an optimized hybrid (thermal and conventional electric) technology. The objective function of the optimization is expected to include life- cycle cost as well as space requirement. Appropriate metrics will be used to characterize life-cycle cost (such as unit life-cycle cost – cost per liter of fresh water produced). Model the most promising technology for use with solar energy.
