This week we will be working on our big debate. You must come prepared all week to the library! You must bring a package of 4” x 6” lined index cards to class. You can share with a couple of people. You will make 15 cards. You must bring the sources that you’ve collected so far to the library ALL WEEK.

Thesis Statement Tomorrow students in period 6, you must turn in your individual thesis statements (5 points). Your thesis should be clear and concise. It will be an assertion of policy. For ex. The death penalty should be illegal. For ex. Abortion should remain legal in the United States.

I. Introduction/Thesis The Roman Numeral Topic from your outline Write your thesis statement here. The legal driving age for teens should be 18 years of age.

I. Introduction Earnhardt, Dale. “Driving Crazy.” Drivers of America Mar March The Roman Numeral Topic from your outline First write the technique you will use. Then exemplify the technique. For ex, if you are using a statistic, write statistic and then write the statistic you will use. Now, document the full source citation. Statistic 7/10 adults agree that the driving age should be raised to 18 years of age.

Body Paragraph The (Roman Numeral and) topic from your outline A direct quote from one source. Put direct quotes “in quotes” The full source citation. According to police chief John Smith, “teenage drivers under the age of eighteen are 5 times more likely to get into a car accident than older drivers.” Doe, John. “Teens-Too Fast Too Furious.” The Fastlane Feb March 2009.

Body Paragraph The (Roman Numeral and) topic from your outline A paraphrase from your last source. Using the direct quote from the last slide, paraphrase what the quote says. Put it in your own words. Look at this sample. The full source citation. According to police chief John Smith, statistics show that car accidents that involve teens under eighteen occur more often than car accidents with teens over eighteen. In fact, if you are under eighteen, you are 5 times more likely to be in an accident. Doe, John. “Teens-Too Fast Too Furious.” The Fastlane Feb March 2009.

Paraphrase Example “Child beauty pageants force little girls into regressive roles of feminine beauty that are too adult and too overtly sexualized.” Paraphrase Beauty pageants force young girls to act like women, exposing themselves in a sexually mature way.

Body Paragraph The (Roman Numeral and) topic from your outline A direct quote from your second source. Put direct quotes “in quotes” The full source citation. Some websites have already done the work for you. Be sure you use MLA.

V. Conclusion The Roman Numeral and topic from your outline Write your proposed solution to the problem. Should the law change? Should it stay the same? Should it be amended? If someone else proposed a solution that you think would work, quote them here or use a paraphrase (That means put what they said in your own words. Don’t forget, you still must credit them!) If you are using a quote or paraphrase, write the full source citation.

Audio and Visual Aids The (Roman Numeral and) topic from your outline On this card, write your ideas for you audio and/or visual aids Write the full source citation of where you got your audio and visual aids. Write the full source citation (s) of where you got your audio and/or visual aids. For my auditory aid I will play the record- breaking (home-runs in a single season) game involving Barry Bonds, suspected of using The Cream and The Clear, designer synthetic steroids. For my visual aid, I will show a picture of Barry Bonds before the drugs and a picture after. (Head grew 2 inches at 35 or 36 years old)

Notecards with info that supports Roman Numeral I Notecards with info that supports Roman Numeral II Notecards with info that supports Roman Numeral III Then, begin thinking about your argument. Decide which arguments should come first and which last. Which will be used as supports? Which as refutation? Remember, some of your quotes and paraphrases will be used in refutation of your opponent’s views. Start labeling the cards with where they will be used in your outline/speech. This may change, so use pencil. When you are finished with your cards, you will be ready to sit down with your opponent. When you’ve gone through all your sources, you’ll have TEN notecards, filled with info and where you got it from…
