History Kansas became a state on Jan. 29,1861. People are called Jayhawkers. Kansas was the 34th state. Because of the Civil War, it was so bloody, one of Kansas` nicknames is Bleeding Kansas. Since Kansas is right in the middle of the U.S.A., it has a nickname of Midway U.S.A. Kansas produces so much wheat, Kansas is now called The Wheat State. It is also called Jayhawker State, (It has nothing to do with mascots) and The Breadbasket of America.
