NFHP Assessment Update Gary E. Whelan and Andrea C. Ostroff NFHP Science and Data Committee Co-Chairs November 2014

2010 Assessment

Inland Assessment Strategy – Core Plan Greatly enhance fish data Better characterize dams and fragmentation Include stream buffers SARP inspired Begin to include hydrology by adding water withdrawals Improve scoring approach

Assessment Progress – Spatial Framework

Assessment Progress – New Variables

Assessment Progress – Greatly Increased Fish Data ~ 80K records

Assessment Progress – Analyses Waterbody Size Headwater < 100 km 2 Medium Rivers 100 – 10,000 km 2 Large Rivers > 10,000 km 2 Additional Fish Metrics Fish life history trait EPA intolerant and tolerant species Gamefish Reach scores based on multiple disturbances

Alaska Assessment NHD+ is coming to AK soon

Alaska Assessment

Assessment Progress - Deliverables

2015 Marine Assessment Update Gulf Demonstration Complete Spatial framework developed Data attributed Landscape stressors Local habitat stressors Fish and shellfish data Dose response relationships developed Species - Stressor maps

Assessment Progress Marine –Great Lakes Assessment – UM/MI DNR Moving independently forward with funding from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust and GLBFHP Geospatial system nearly complete –Rectified US and Canada watershed systems –Developing habitat classification system at this time

2015 Marine Assessment Plan Partial revision Complete Gulf Coast detailed assessment Available Pacific Coast assessment Incorporate and report on available Great Lakes information Incomplete areas Atlantic Coast AK HI Linking inland-marine systems Progress with Great Lakes

2015 Assessment April/May 2015 – Review assessment products June 2015 – Assessment products delivered October 2015 – Draft report completed January 2016 – Board publishes report

Next Steps for 2020 Move to NHD+ Version 2 –1:24,500 Bring lakes online –Linkage with MGLFHP Attribute reach and lake data with process data from FHPs and other sources –Hydrology, Connectivity, Material Transport, Geomorphology, Water Quality and Energy Flow Develop tools to determine deviation from expected

NFHP Data System Update Work continues to document and disseminate data from the FHPs and collaborators via the NFHP Data System –Team currently working with EBTJV, MGLFHP and SARP –Aligning data processes of the Multistate Aquatic Resources Information System (state fisheries data systems) to NFHP
