2 Objectives n Class overview (course syllabus) n Explain How class will be organized

3 Why a networking course? n Computer Networks no longer exclusive domain of engineers and technicians n Computer Networks in use by organizations n Need for employees trained to use and manage computer/network applications

4 Business/IS versus Engineers & Computer science professionals Computer science Business/IS professionals Computer science and electrical engineering students are trained to work in hardware, software, and networking vendor firms, such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, and Cisco Systems. B/IS students are trained to work in end user organizations, such as banks, government agencies, and manufacturing firms-- organizations that use Computer Networks to get their work done

5 Course objectives n Describe the layers in the OSI 7-layer model and analyze their application in real-world networks. n Describe the various types of networks and internetworks and evaluate their application in a variety of business situations. n List and describe the principles of good network design, network management n Understand telecommunications systems and the Internet operation Knowledge

6 Course objectives n Install and configure a server operating system. n Manage user and group accounts on a local area network. n Manage disks and file systems n Implement and configure directory services n Implement group policies n Install network protocols and Internet services Skills
