Use gusta after the following indirect object pronouns to express “to like” an infinitive or singular noun.  (No)Me gusta – I (don’t) like  Te gusta – you(familiar) like  Le gusta- he, she likes, you(polite) like  Nos gusta – we like  Os gusta – you(familiar) like  Les gusta – they, you (plural) like + singular noun or infinitive

Ejemplos:  Me gusta la clase. I like the class.  Te gusta hacer la tarea. You like to do the work.  Nos gusta leer. We like to read.  Le gusta el libro. He/she/you like(s) the book.  Les gusta comer. They/you all like to eat. >In the last 2 examples, le and les can have various translations. Out of context, it can be unclear.

Use gustan to express “to like” more than one infinitive or plural noun.  Me gustan – I like  Te gustan – you(familiar) like  Le gustan- he, she likes, you(polite) like  Nos gustan – we like  Os gustan – you(familiar) like  Les gustan – they, you (plural) like + Plural noun or 2 infinitives

Notice the “n” ending.  Me gustan los frijoles. I like beans.  ¿No te gustan estudiar y leer? Don’t you like to study and read?  Le gustan los sábados. He/she/you like Saturdays.  Nos gustan sus zapatos. We like her shoes.  Os gustan los muchachos. You like the boys.

You may add an initial phrase for extra emphasis or to clarify.  A mí me gusta español. I like Spanish.  ¿A ti te gustan tacos? Do you like tacos?  A Ud. le gusta hablar. You like to talk.  A ella le gusta cantar. She likes to sing.  A él le gustan Mexico y Guatemala. He likes Mexico and Guatemala. >In the first 2 examples the phrase simply gives the me and te more emphasis. >In the last 3 examples, the purpose of the phrase is to clarifiy le. >These phrases are totally optional.

And the plurals….  A nosotros(as) nos gusta la clase de inglés. We like English.  A vosotros(as) os gustan sus camisetas. You like his t- shirts.  A ellos les gusta ir al museo. They like to go to the museum.  A ellas les gusta el parque. They like the park.  A Uds. les gustan los refrescos. You like the drinks.  In the 1 st two examples, the purpose of the initial phrase is to place extra emphasis on the nos and os.  In the last three examples, the purpose of the phrase is to clarify the les.

Traduce al español.  I like chicken.  Me gusta el pollo.  We like to study.  Nos gusta estudiar.  They like the salad.  Les gusta la ensalada.  Do you like Fridays?  ¿Te gustan los viernes?

 He likes fish and chicken.  Le gustan pescado y pollo.  You(plural) like the menu.  Os gusta el menú / Les gusta el menú.  She likes the waiter.  Le gusta el mesero.  I do not like the backpacks.  No me gustan las mochilas.
