Protestant Reformation: Beginning Protestant= someone who protested the Catholic Church. Reformation= when people demand change(s). The Protestant Reformation began b/c… The Church made Protestants say “ I MAD!”

I. Indulgences Then Now Indulgences= paying for forgiveness of your sins. Church is selling forgiveness to make $$$$$$$$$. Who did this anger?

M. Merchants want usury Usury= lending money and charging interest. Church says usury is wrong. Who would this anger? Protestants? ML?

A. Absolute power and wealth of the church Why was the Catholic Church so powerful in Europe? What people would have preferred to be most powerful?

Reflection Look at each letter of IMAD. Who would have been angry at the Church about each one and why?

Martin Luther Was a German priest in the Catholic Church. Observes indulgences going on in the Church and begins to question the Church’s actions and authority. Posts his observations (95 theses) on the Church entrance in After reading the 95 theses, Catholics started to question the Church’s authority and wrongdoings.

Martin Luther Cont Catholics, who questioned the Church’s authority and power became known as Protestants. These Protestants later created the religion of Protestantism. Martin Luther, was excommunicated by the Catholic Church. ML goes into hiding back in Germany and translates the Bible into German. Why is this important? Asks pal, Gutenberg to print Bible in German. Why is this important?

Counter Reformation Catholic Church admits their wrongdoings and declares that indulgences will no longer be a practice of the Church.

Reflection Do you think you would have had the same courage and integrity as Martin Luther? If yes, why? If no, why not?
