All Saint’s Day & Day of the Dead Name: Date: 10/12/2011 Period:

Brief History On 10/31, spirits of all deceased children (angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On 11/2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities”

Altars Altars (ofrendas) are made in each home to offer & honor deceased relatives. Flowers, food, toys, candy, soda, water, hot cocoa, even cigarettes & shots of ‘mezcal’ Sugar skulls & little skeletons Many spend over 2 month's income to honor their dead relatives.

Sugar Skulls Lots of sugar available in Mexico Sugar skulls represent a departed soul – name written on the forehead – placed on the home ofrenda or gravestone to honor the return of a spirit.

Folk Art Traditional art styles, subjects, and materials of a culture handed down for generations.

Motif A central design in a pattern that can be consistent or contain varieties

Your Project: Create a “sugar” skull that holds personal meaning to you Does not have to be entirely realistic but should be recognized as a skull (does not have to be a human skull!) Use other 3-D forms (hair, hat, decoration etc) to incorporate in the skull Use of a “motif” & pattern.
