Remainders When we solve a division calculation there is often a remainder. What we do with the remainder depends on the question asked. When faced with a remainder we usually do one of the following: State the remainder Round up Round down Give a decimal Give a fraction

Remainders 1) State the remainder If we get a normal division calculation, we often just state the remainder: 13 ) 1 5 2

Remainders 1) State the remainder If we get a normal division calculation, we often just state the remainder: 13 ) …

Remainders 1) State the remainder If we get a normal division calculation, we often just state the remainder: 13 ) r 9

Remainders 2) Round up Worded problems often need you to decide which way to round. A coach can fit 47 people in it. How many coaches are needed for a school trip for 300 people?

Remainders 2) Round up A coach can fit 47 people in it. How many coaches are needed for a school trip for 300 people? 300 ÷ 47 = 6 r 18

Remainders 2) Round up A coach can fit 47 people in it. How many coaches are needed for a school trip for 300 people? 300 ÷ 47 = 6 r 18 The remainder are people who cant be missed off, so they need an extra coach just for them! We need to round up. 6 r 18 becomes 7. So we need 7 coaches.

Remainders 3) Round down Worded problems often need you to decide which way to round. Eggs are sold in boxes of 6. How many boxes can be made from 100 eggs?

Remainders 3) Round down Eggs are sold in boxes of 6. How many boxes can be made from 100 eggs? 100 ÷ 6 = 16 r 4

Remainders 3) Round down Eggs are sold in boxes of 6. How many boxes can be made from 100 eggs? 100 ÷ 6 = 16 r 4 We cant make a full box with 4 eggs, so we can only make 16 full boxes.

Remainders 3 & 4) Round up / down Sometimes you are asked to give your answer to the nearest whole number / 10 / 100 etc. Remember: if the digit after you round is 5 or more, we round up, otherwise we round down.

Remainders 4) Give a decimal Although there are other cases, we mostly see decimal remainders with money questions. Share £7 between 4 people

Remainders 4) Give a decimal Although there are other cases, we mostly see decimal remainders with money questions. Share £7 between 4 people 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75

Remainders 4) Give a decimal Although there are other cases, we mostly see decimal remainders with money questions. Share £7 between 4 people £7 ÷ 4 = £1.75

Remainders 5) Give a fraction Fractions are more accurate than decimals but often harder to understand. This type of question appears where there is no easy decimal answer.

Remainders 5) Give a fraction Share 17 bars of chocolate between 5 people 17 ÷ 5 = 3 r 2 The remainder (2) is 2 parts shared between 5 people.

Remainders 5) Give a fraction Share 17 bars of chocolate between 5 people 17 ÷ 5 = 3 2 5

Remainders So remember: decide what the question is asking you, and then decide what to do with the remainder.
