Presentation transcript:

Role of aquatic and impact of regional irrigation to local livelihood in Mekong Delta (Camau peninsula)

Introduction 1,6 million hecta Drain area, lowland with extremly complicated irrigation system (both nature and human constructions) 7 sub ecosystem and 51 irrigation zone Rice and aquatic are the main livelihood Have been applying the combining forest-agricultural-aquatic

Type of construction Cannal Sluice gate Dyke Small dam pump station

Group of constructions Flood control Prevent salinity Water supply River gate/ sea dyke

Purpose of construction Agricultural produce Transportation

There are the debatation about the impact of irrigation in Mekong delta There are not adequate concern about the community aquatic issue Title of research: Role of aquatic and impact of irrigation system on local community aquatic livelihood in Mekong delta

Target of research Aquatic catching households Aquatic raising households Poor households Line Managements Agencies

Research approaching Analyze 2nd data Interview PRA KIP

Research Activities Site survey Analyze role of gender in aquatic Analyze impact of irrigation system on aquatic Propose the solutions

General information of aquatic resources in Mekong Delta

Mekong River in Vietnam has 2 tributaries (250 each branches)  square meter About 322 aquatic species

Species in Omon Xano irrigation system 44 fish species Mostly in An Giang province 36 species and Can Tho city (34 species), Bac Lieu province 26 species Some value species: Notopterus notoperus, catlocarpio siamensis

Reason of reduction Increasing population Using destruction tool Dyke system Using Pesticide Small net the flow of river was recudued

Role of aquatic resources Provide food for local communities Increase income provide employment Feeding the young fish in aquatic raising

Impact of irrigation system Omon Xano system cause reduction of 15% aquatic catching in region (open gate once per year) and 30% (open gate twice per year) The ecosystem then also been changed Species are different due to season (dry season and flood season)
