Presentation transcript:

Health Risks Being aware of certain risks to your health is part of becoming an adult. Risk Behaviors- are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. Knowing your risks can help you make safe and responsible decisions in life.

CDC 6 Risk Behaviors The Center of Disease Control and Prevention identified 6 behaviors that account for most of the deaths and disabilities among young people under age 24. Tobacco Use Unhealthy dietary behaviors Inadequate physical activity Alcohol and other drug use Sexual Behaviors that may result in HIV infection, other STDs, and unintended pregnancies. Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence.

Risks & Consequences Before you engage in risk behaviors, it’s important to evaluate the consequences. Cumulative Risks-are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk.

Example Eating occasional high fat food!

Avoid or Reduce Risks Prevention-taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse. Regular Medical and Dental check ups Checkups can detect health problems early, thus preventing them form getting worse! Abstinence-is a deliberate decision to avoid high risk behaviors, including sexual activity and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.

Lifestyle Factors Are the personal habits or behaviors related to the way a person lives. Positive health habits = Healthier Lives

Lifestyle Factors Getting eight hours or sleep each night Starting each day with a healthy breakfast Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day. Maintaining a healthy way Abstaining from smoking or using other tobacco products Abstaining from the use of alcohol and other drugs
